Job description

Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham client with its search for a Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records related to construction projects. This position assists with job cost accounting, accounts payable, billing, payroll support, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Process accounts payable invoices, ensuring proper coding to jobs and cost codes.
  • Prepare customer billings, including progress billings and time & material invoices.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and general ledger accounts.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Record journal entries and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Track and analyze job costs, budgets, and project profitability.
  • Review subcontractor invoices, lien waivers, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with payroll processing and labor cost allocations.
  • Prepare sales tax reports and other regulatory filings.
  • Support project managers with budget tracking and cost reporting.
  • Monitor work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and project accruals.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Assist with external audits and tax preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of accounting experience (construction industry experience preferred).
  • Understanding of job cost accounting principles.
  • Experience with construction ERP software such as CMiC, Viewpoint Vista, Foundation, Sage 100 Contractor, Sage Intacct Construction, or Procore Financials is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and basic formulas.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
