Safety Training Manager information

What is a safety training manager?

Safety Training Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety training programs within organizations. Their main goal is to ensure that employees understand workplace safety protocols, comply with regulations, and are equipped to minimize risks and prevent accidents. They conduct training sessions, evaluate safety procedures, and keep current with safety laws and best practices. Safety Training Managers also investigate incidents, report on safety performance, and continuously improve safety culture in the workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a safety training manager?

To thrive as a Safety Training Manager, you need expertise in occupational health and safety regulations, instructional design, and a relevant degree or safety certification such as OSHA, CSP, or NEBOSH. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), incident reporting tools, and safety compliance software is typically required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and analytical skills help you effectively educate employees and foster a culture of safety. These competencies are crucial for minimizing workplace hazards, ensuring compliance, and driving continuous safety improvement.

How does a safety training manager typically collaborate with other departments to improve workplace safety?

Safety Training Managers often work closely with HR, operations, and management teams to design and implement effective safety programs. They coordinate training sessions, gather feedback from various departments, and tailor content to address specific workplace hazards. Regular communication and joint safety audits are common, ensuring that safety protocols are understood and followed across all levels of the organization. This collaborative approach helps build a strong safety culture and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Ensure technical training aligns with Certarus’ HSE Management System, safe work practices, operating procedures, manufacturer guidance, and applicable regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Develop written examinations, practical assessments, and field evaluations to verify employees demonstrate the required competency after performing assigned work independently.
  • Establish instructor qualification, train-the-trainer, and periodic instructor evaluation requirements to support consistent training delivery.
  • Partner with key departmental stakeholders to identify technical training and qualification needs that support operational requirements and corporate objectives.
  • Incorporate equipment changes, revised procedures, incident findings, audit results, field observations, and operational lessons into technical training programs.
  • Maintain governance and version control for technical training materials, assessments, qualification criteria, and related records.
  • Analyze and report on training completion, qualification status, assessment results, and overall training effectiveness.
  • Oversee training and qualification tracking to ensure records are accurate, current, and available to operational leaders.
  • Conduct periodic visits to Certarus hubs, training locations, customer sites, and field operations to observe work, evaluate training effectiveness, coach instructors, and remain current with operational practices.

Requirements:

  • Preferred bachelor’s degree in engineering, education, occupational safety, business, or a related field. Equivalent relevant technical and operational experience may be considered.
  • Minimum seven years of relevant experience in technical training, field operations, equipment maintenance, transportation, compression or a comparable industrial environment.
  • Minimum three years of leadership, supervisory, or program management experience, including experience leading technical trainers, instructors, mentors, or operational subject matter experts.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and administering competency-based training programs, written examinations, practical evaluations, qualification criteria, and train-the-trainer programs.
  • Working knowledge of industrial equipment, field operating procedures, technical documentation, and practical skills assessment.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and the ability to apply them to classroom, virtual, hands-on, and field-based instruction.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, operating procedures, engineering information, regulatory requirements, and manufacturer guidance and translate them into effective training materials.
  • Experience with learning management systems, training record management, and qualification tracking.
  • Strong written, verbal, facilitation, coaching, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with frontline personnel, technical specialists, operational leaders, and senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical and operational outcomes by working collaboratively across Operations, HSE, Engineering, and Fleet.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating across multiple departments, regions, and operating environments.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to Certarus hubs and job sites as required.
