Job description
The Multi-site Safety Manager is a key leadership position within the safety department, the transportation business unit, and at the depot level. This is a hands-on position responsible for partnering with local and company leadership to develop, implement, and manage the organization's safety programs and initiatives at the depot level. Reporting directly to the Director of Corporate Safety, the Safety Manager owns all aspects of occupational health and safety, ensuring compliance with regulations, promoting a safety culture, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance across multiple depots. Additionally, this role provides support and continuity for DOT/FMSCA compliance activities in coordination with fleet safety leadership, as needed. The role requires strong leadership, a collaborative mindset, strategic thinking, and a comprehensive understanding of safety, safety management systems, and travel within the United States. Based on needs, up to 75% travel may be required to support multi-depot operations and ensure consistent safety practices across all locations.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Program Development and Support:
Implement and maintain, at a site level, comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures in alignment with organizational EHS standards, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
Continuously assess and enhance the effectiveness of site-level safety programs to mitigate risks.
Collaborate with the Director of Corporate Safety to support developing safety programs/procedures.
Partner with transportation, HR, and maintenance teams to embed safety into all business practices and ensure cross-functional alignment.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate safety documentation, including incident reports, inspections, and safety training.
Standardize safety documentation, procedures, and reporting across all depots to ensure consistency and compliance.
Compile and analyze safety data and metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Compliance and Regulatory Requirements:
Ensure compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations; uphold DOT/FMCSA compliance programs under the direction of fleet safety leadership when needed.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify areas of non-compliance and implement corrective actions with follow-up.
Risk Assessment and Management:
Collaborate with local leadership to conduct risk assessments to identify and develop appropriate controls for potential hazards.
Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks and prevent accidents and injuries.
Training and Education:
Develop and deliver local safety training programs for employees at all levels.
Promote safety awareness and provide education on safe work practices, hazard identification, and incident prevention.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to integrate safety principles into orientation programs and ongoing training initiatives.
Incident Management and Investigation:
Collaborate and lead the overall investigation of safety incidents, accidents, and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Ensure accurate and timely reporting of incidents into safety management information systems.
Track the implementation and completion of actions to ensure resolution and prevent recurrence.
Safety Culture and Communication:
In collaboration with leadership, drive a positive safety culture through employee engagement, participation, and ownership of safety and safety-related programs.
Communicate safety-related information effectively to drivers, management, and stakeholders through various channels.
Work with local leadership to develop and assist in implementation of safety improvement initiatives.
Conduct local safety meetings and other forums to address safety concerns, share best practices, and recognize safety achievements.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
Monitor key safety-related performance indicators to address emerging safety concerns proactively.
Prepare safety reports for management, highlighting trends, progress, and areas for improvement.
Collaborate with the Director of Corporate Safety to develop and present safety-related presentations to site-level leadership and other stakeholders.
Fleet Safety & DOT Support (Secondary Responsibility)
Coordinate with Transportation leadership to align safety and compliance initiatives.
Support DOT/FMCSA compliance activities in coordination with fleet safety leadership.
Provide backup assistance for fleet-related incident investigations and corrective action tracking.
Reinforce driver safety programs through training, communication, and field engagement.
Partner with fleet maintenance teams to strengthen vehicle and driver compliance readiness.
Deliver contingency support for fleet safety programs when needed
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field is preferred.
Proven experience as a safety professional, with at least 5 years, with 1 year in a leadership role.
Experience supporting fleet safety or transportation compliance programs.
Extensive knowledge of occupational and FMCSA safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
Solid understanding of hazard identification methodologies and incident investigation techniques.
Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
Solid leadership skills with the ability to influence and drive change at all levels of the organization.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Proven communication and interpersonal skills that foster teamwork and collaboration, with the ability to engage and motivate employees.
Proficiency in using safety management software, data analysis tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
