What Do Safety Managers Do?

Safety managers do a lot of planning to ensure that the safety program of their workplace is developed and followed. In addition to training all supervising employees on the proper safety procedures and hazard preventions set in place, safety managers investigate and study past incidents in order to improve employee safety. They create manuals, report incidents, and document changes. They also perform inspections on equipment and observe the workplace to ensure all rules are followed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Safety Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Safety Manager, you need expertise in occupational health and safety regulations, risk assessment, and incident investigation, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in safety, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with OSHA standards, safety management systems (like ISO 45001), and certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or ASP (Associate Safety Professional) are typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help foster a safety culture and ensure compliance across teams. These skills are crucial for minimizing workplace hazards, reducing incidents, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

How does a Safety Manager typically collaborate with other departments to promote workplace safety?

Safety Managers work closely with various departments, such as operations, human resources, and maintenance, to identify potential hazards and implement safety protocols. They often lead safety training sessions, coordinate emergency response drills, and consult with department heads to ensure compliance with regulations. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels with different teams is essential for fostering a culture of safety throughout the organization.

What are Safety Managers?

Safety Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety policies and procedures within an organization to ensure a safe working environment. They conduct risk assessments, train employees on safety protocols, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Safety Managers also investigate accidents or incidents to determine their causes and recommend preventive measures. Their ultimate goal is to minimize workplace hazards and promote a culture of safety.

At Boys & Girls Clubs of King County, we are taking youth programming to a new level. We are a leader in youth development, providing a safe, affordable place for kids and teens during critical out-of-school time. Our Clubs offer life-changing programs and services to more than 26,000 youth throughout the greater Seattle area.

As the third largest major metro Boys & Girls Club organization in the United States, we have a rich 75 year history serving King County youth. If you are passionate about youth development, love to connect with people, have a proven track record of results with youth, and want to be part of an extraordinary team, Boys & Girls Clubs of King County is for you!

Opportunity Overview:

The Safety Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive safety culture across all Boys & Girls Club of King County (BGCKC) club sites. This role ensures that every child, staff member, and volunteer operates in a safe, compliant, and nurturing environment in alignment with BGCKC's mission to inspire and enable all young people to reach their full potential.

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve organization-wide safety policies, procedures, and protocols across all BGCKC club locations.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations including OSHA, Washington State L&I requirements, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) national safety standards.

  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments at each club site and develop corrective action plans in response to identified hazards.

  • Maintain and update the organization's Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), including protocols for fires, lockdowns, natural disasters, and medical emergencies.

Incident Management & Reporting

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all safety incidents, near-misses, and emergencies across club sites.

  • Investigate all accidents and incidents thoroughly; document findings and implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence.

  • Maintain accurate and timely incident reporting records in compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational standards.

  • Coordinate with BGCKC's insurance carrier and legal counsel on workers' compensation claims and liability matters.

Training & Culture

  • Design and facilitate engaging safety training programs for all staff and volunteers, including CPR/First Aid, mandated reporter protocols, youth protection training, and emergency response procedures.

  • Champion a proactive safety culture in which all team members feel responsible for and empowered to promote physical and emotional safety for youth members.

  • Partner with Club Directors and program staff to integrate age-appropriate safety practices into daily programming and activities.

  • Provide onboarding safety orientation for all new employees and volunteers.

Facilities & Environmental Safety

  • Collaborate with the Facilities team to ensure all buildings, playgrounds, equipment, and vehicles meet safety standards and are regularly inspected and maintained.

  • Oversee environmental safety concerns including allergen management, chemical storage, and sanitation practices.

  • Manage safety-related vendor and contractor relationships, ensuring third parties adhere to BGCKC's safety standards while on-site.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as a member of the organization's crisis management team, providing guidance and coordination during critical incidents.

  • Partner with HR and Program leadership to address behavioral safety concerns involving youth, staff, or volunteers.

  • Prepare and present safety performance reports and recommendations to senior leadership and the Board of Directors as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum 4 years of progressive experience in safety management, preferably in a youth-serving, nonprofit, educational, or multi-site environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations, Washington State L&I requirements, and emergency management best practices.

  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and sites simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication and training facilitation skills; ability to engage diverse audiences including youth, frontline staff, and executive leaders.

  • Commitment to BGCKC's mission and demonstrated cultural competency in working with communities of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Valid Washington State driver's license and ability to travel regularly between club sites.

Preferred

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Youth Protection Professional designation.
