What is a safari consultant?

A Safari Consultant is a travel specialist who plans and arranges safari trips for clients. They provide expert advice on destinations, accommodations, wildlife experiences, and logistics based on travelers' preferences and budgets. Their role includes booking flights, lodges, permits, and guided tours while ensuring a seamless travel experience. Strong knowledge of safari destinations, wildlife seasons, and customer service skills are essential for success in this role.

What are some common challenges faced by safari consultants and how are they addressed?

Safari Consultants often navigate challenges such as last-minute itinerary changes, variable weather conditions affecting travel plans, and clients’ unique needs or expectations. Success in this role involves maintaining flexibility, quick problem-solving skills, and effective communication with both clients and a network of lodges, guides, and local partners. Consultants typically address these issues by staying organized, setting clear expectations, and keeping up-to-date with developments at safari destinations. Building strong relationships with suppliers allows for swift adjustments and ensures clients still have exceptional experiences despite unforeseen changes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the safari consultant position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Safari Consultant, you need in-depth knowledge of tourism destinations (especially in Africa), top-tier customer service skills, and experience in travel planning or tour operations, often supported by a degree in travel, tourism, or hospitality. Familiarity with booking systems, global distribution systems (GDS), CRM platforms, and specialized safari planning software is highly beneficial. Outstanding organizational abilities, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal communication help you build rapport with clients and coordinate complex itineraries. These skills ensure the creation of seamless, memorable travel experiences and build lasting client relationships in a highly competitive market.

  • Convert qualified luxury travel enquiries into confirmed, high-value bookings and long-term client relationships

  • Design and deliver seamless, highly detailed bespoke itineraries across Southern Africa

Job description

Our Southern Africa division is expanding, and we are seeking highly experienced Luxury Travel Consultants with deep destination expertise and a proven track record in high-performance luxury travel sales.

This role is designed for true industry professionals—individuals who understand the complexity of luxury safari travel, excel in bespoke itinerary design, and consistently convert high-value international enquiries into confirmed bookings.

Candidates must bring strong commercial awareness, destination mastery, and the ability to build immediate trust with discerning global clients.

Success in this role is measured by conversion performance, revenue contribution, client satisfaction, and the quality of tailor-made itineraries delivered—not enquiry handling volume.

Key Responsibilities
  • Convert qualified luxury travel enquiries into confirmed, high-value bookings and long-term client relationships
  • Design and deliver seamless, highly detailed bespoke itineraries across Southern Africa
  • Establish credibility and trust quickly with international clients through exceptional communication, emotional intelligence, and cultural awareness
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of Southern African destinations, lodge portfolios, routing, and seasonal travel dynamics
  • Ensure absolute accuracy across all proposals, documentation, CRM records, and client communications
  • Independently manage a high-performance sales pipeline in alignment with team processes and commercial targets
  • Contribute to African Safari Group’s commitment to responsible tourism, conservation, and meaningful travel experiences
  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams to ensure operational excellence and a seamless client journey from enquiry to return travel
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in luxury travel, bespoke safari sales, or high-end B2C travel consulting
  • Demonstrated expertise across Southern Africa, including:
Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Eswatini, and Lesotho
  • Proven commercial success with measurable conversion rates and revenue generation
  • Strong experience using CRM and itinerary systems such as Wetu, Tourplan, or equivalent platforms
  • Tertiary qualification in Travel & Tourism, Hospitality, Business, or Marketing (advantageous)
  • Fluent English essential; additional languages such as German, French, Dutch, Spanish, or Italian are highly advantageous
  • Strong commercial acumen with an understanding of margins, yield, and conversion performance
  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to read client needs and build trust rapidly
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organisational discipline
  • Self-driven, resilient, and comfortable working independently in a remote or hybrid environment
  • Calm under pressure with a solutions-focused mindset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Genuine passion for Africa, conservation, sustainability, and delivering transformative travel experiences

A competitive, performance-linked remuneration structure

The opportunity to represent one of Africa’s leading luxury safari brands

Access to world-class training, destination knowledge, and operational support

A high-performance culture that rewards excellence and supports career progression

The opportunity to contribute meaningfully to conservation and community upliftment initiatives across Southern Africa
