What is an SNMP?

An SNMP job typically involves managing and monitoring network devices using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Professionals in this role configure, maintain, and troubleshoot SNMP-based systems to ensure efficient network performance. They work with network monitoring tools, analyze SNMP data, and respond to alerts indicating possible issues. This role is common in IT and network administration, requiring knowledge of SNMP protocols, MIBs (Management Information Bases), and device configurations.

What are typical responsibilities for someone in an SNMP specialist or engineer role?

In an SNMP Specialist or Engineer role, your daily responsibilities often include configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting SNMP-enabled network devices, monitoring network health, and responding to alerts. You'll work closely with network operations teams to analyze data trends, pinpoint potential issues, and implement preventative solutions. Collaboration with IT support, system administrators, and sometimes vendors is common to ensure integrated network management and effective incident response. This role also involves generating reports on network performance and contributing to the optimization of monitoring strategies, providing both technical and analytical challenges within a dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the SNMP position, and why are they important?

To succeed in an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Engineer or Specialist role, you should possess deep knowledge of network protocols, system administration, and network monitoring, typically supported by a degree in computer science or network engineering. Familiarity with network management tools (such as SolarWinds, Nagios, or WhatsUp Gold), and certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA, are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective cross-team communication help set top performers apart. These skills are essential to ensure seamless network operations, timely issue detection, and efficient collaboration in maintaining robust IT infrastructure.

Job description

Role Description

As an Industrial IoT Integration Engineer, you will build the critical bridges between our intelligent orchestration platform and the physical world. You will design, develop, and maintain the library of drivers and connectors that allow Hammerhead ORCA to communicate with a diverse array of data center assets—from utility meters and cooling systems to GPU clusters and building management systems (BMS). Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will ensure our system can reliably ingest high-frequency telemetry and execute precise control actions across multi-vendor hardware environments, effectively translating RL decisions into physical reality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Connector Development: Architect and build high-performance, bi-directional connectors leveraging protocols such as MQTT, SNMP, IPMI, and Redfish, as well as RESTful APIs, to interface with power, cooling, and compute infrastructure.
  • Device Abstraction: Create a unified hardware abstraction layer that normalizes data from disparate vendors and equipment types, allowing our RL agents to interact with a standardized model of the data center.
  • Reliability & Safety: Implement robust error handling, connection pooling, and fail-safe mechanisms to ensure safe operation of mission-critical power and cooling assets during network interruptions or device failures.
  • Latency Optimization: Optimize data ingestion pipelines and concurrent dataflows in Golang to minimize latency, ensuring real-time telemetry reaches our control loop within milliseconds.
  • Field Integration: Collaborate with deployment teams to troubleshoot protocol and network issues in the field and expand our library of supported devices as we scale to new data center sites globally.
Qualifications
  • Protocol Expert: Deep understanding of network and IoT communication protocols such as MQTT, SNMP, Redfish, and REST APIs. Experience with OpenADR is a plus.
  • Concurrent Systems Programming: 3+ years of experience in Golang, with a strong focus on concurrency, parallelism, and network I/O patterns. Experience with Python, C++, or Rust is advantageous.
  • Hardware Intimacy: Comfortable working with physical devices, IoT sensors, PLCs, or Building Management Systems (BMS). Skilled in debugging packet captures and interpreting equipment technical documentation.
  • Data Center Knowledge: Familiarity with data center infrastructure (UPS, PDUs, chillers, CRACs) or similar industrial control environments.
  • Scrappy & Resourceful: Able to reverse-engineer proprietary interfaces in the morning and design scalable device control architectures in the afternoon.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary, bonus, 401(k) plan and equity in a rapidly growing startup
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Opportunity to apply the latest AI technologies working with an experienced team
