What is an RVT?

RVT stands for Registered Veterinary Technician. RVTs are trained professionals who assist veterinarians in providing medical care to animals. Their responsibilities include performing laboratory tests, taking x-rays, administering anesthesia, assisting in surgeries, and educating pet owners about animal care. To become an RVT, individuals must complete an accredited veterinary technology program and pass a licensing exam. RVTs play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of animals in veterinary clinics, hospitals, and other animal care settings.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an RVT?

To thrive as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), you need a solid understanding of veterinary medical procedures, animal care, and laboratory techniques, typically gained through an accredited veterinary technology program and passing the VTNE exam. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, diagnostic imaging equipment, and anesthesia monitoring systems is essential. Strong communication, attention to detail, and compassion are critical soft skills for working with animals, owners, and veterinary teams. These skills ensure the health and safety of animal patients, support effective teamwork, and enhance the client experience in veterinary settings.

What are common challenges faced by RVTs in a clinical setting?

Registered Veterinary Technicians often encounter challenges such as managing high caseloads, handling emotional situations with pet owners, and adapting to rapidly changing priorities during emergencies. The role demands excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with veterinarians and other team members, as well as the ability to perform technical tasks under pressure. RVTs must also stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine and maintain strict attention to detail to ensure the safety and well-being of animal patients.

Are you an RVT who actually likes doing RVT things? 😎

We're an independently owned, community-focused veterinary hospital looking for an experienced, confident California-licensed RVT to join our small team two days a week.

This isn't a position where you'll spend your day wondering what you're supposed to do. We need someone who can jump in, think independently, and put their skills to work.

🦷 Fridays = Surgery & Dentals

Anesthesia induction, intubation, monitoring & recovery

IV catheter placement, venipuncture & blood draws

IV fluids & CRIs

Surgical & anesthetic medication calculations/setup

Dental procedures & dental X-rays (we have the handheld x ray device and can train)

Surgical nursing

Diagnostic radiographs

Patient monitoring & recovery

🩺 Saturdays = Appointments & Treatments

Technician appointments & treatments

Venipuncture & in-house lab work

Radiographs

Medication calculations & dispensing

Client education & discharge instructions

Dog & cat handling/restraint

Assisting the doctor with appointments and procedures

We're Looking For Someone Who:

Is a licensed California RVT

Has strong, hands-on general practice experience

Is confident with anesthesia and dentistry

Enjoys teaching and mentoring our VAs and helping them build their technical skills

Can place catheters and draw blood without breaking a sweat

Has good clinical judgment and can work independently

Is comfortable with cats — including the spicy ones 🌶️

Communicates well with clients and coworkers

Is dependable, positive, and enjoys working as part of a small team

What We Offer

💰 $22–$36/hour, based on experience & skill 📅 Consistent Friday/Saturday schedule 👕 Uniforms provided 💵 401(k) 🏥 Paid sick days 🤝 Supportive, close-knit team 📈 Potential for additional hours in the future

If you're an experienced veterinary professional who happens to be an RVT, we want to meet you.

Send us your resume and tell us a little about your experience!
