What are Ruby on Rails developers?

Ruby on Rails developers are software engineers who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They use the Ruby programming language and the Rails framework to create scalable, maintainable, and efficient websites or web applications. Their responsibilities often include designing database structures, writing server-side logic, integrating front-end components, and deploying applications. Ruby on Rails developers work in a variety of industries and are valued for their ability to quickly develop robust web solutions.

Is Ruby on Rails a good career?

Ruby on Rails is a popular web development framework, and roles for Rails developers are in demand due to its use in startups and established companies. Skills in Ruby, Rails, and related tools can lead to job opportunities with competitive salaries. The career typically involves continuous learning to keep up with updates and best practices.

What Is Ruby On Rails?

Ruby on Rails is an application framework for web development. Specifically, it focuses on server-side functions and relies on the model-view-controller pattern. Rails is the framework itself, while Ruby is the programming language in which Rails is written. Ruby on Rails was designed to cut down on repetitive tasks and to be easy to learn with large, easily accessible libraries. It is open source as well, which means there is a large community that you can utilize to answer questions or improve your skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby on Rails Developer, a solid grasp of Ruby programming, Rails framework, object-oriented design, and web development fundamentals is essential, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, and deployment tools like Heroku or AWS is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate with teams and address client needs efficiently. These skills are crucial for building robust, scalable web applications and adapting to evolving project requirements.

Is Ruby on Rails still in demand?

Ruby on Rails remains a popular web development framework, especially for startups and small to medium-sized businesses. While demand has shifted towards JavaScript frameworks and other backend technologies, many companies still seek Rails developers for maintaining and building applications, and knowledge of related tools like Git and SQL enhances employability.

What is a Ruby on Rails job?

A Ruby on Rails job involves developing and maintaining web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. It typically requires skills in Ruby programming, front-end technologies, and understanding of databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL. The role may include tasks such as coding, debugging, testing, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

What is the difference between Ruby On Rails vs JavaScript Developer?

Ruby On Rails and JavaScript Developers often work together but focus on different parts of web development. Rails is primarily used for backend development with a focus on server-side logic, while JavaScript developers handle the frontend, creating interactive user interfaces. Both roles are essential in full-stack development, but their skills and tools differ significantly.

Is Ruby on Rails still used in 2026?

Ruby on Rails remains a popular web development framework for backend roles, especially for startups and companies valuing rapid development. While other frameworks like Node.js and Django have gained popularity, Rails continues to be maintained and used in production environments, with many developers working with its conventions and tools.

What are some common challenges faced by Ruby on Rails developers when working in agile teams?

Ruby on Rails developers in agile environments often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting to changing requirements and maintaining code quality during frequent iterations. Collaborating closely with designers, product managers, and QA specialists requires clear communication and flexibility, especially when integrating new features or resolving bugs under tight deadlines. Additionally, balancing the need for quick delivery with best practices like writing tests and refactoring code can be demanding but is critical for long-term project success.

Job description

About Fullscript

We're an industry-leading health technology company on a mission to help people get better. We started in 2011 with one simple idea. Make it easier for practitioners to access the products they trust so they can deliver better care.

That simple idea grew into a platform that powers every part of care. Today, more than 125,000 practitioners use Fullscript for clinical insights, lab interpretations, patient analytics, education, and access to high-quality supplements. Over 10 million patients rely on Fullscript to stay connected to their care plans and follow through on treatment.

We build tools that make care smarter and more human. Tools that save time, simplify decisions, and help practitioners stay closely connected to the people they care for. When everything they need is in one place, they can focus on what matters most: helping people get better.

This is your invitation.

Bring your ideas, your grit, and your care for people.
Join us and shape the future of care.

Fullscript is looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join the infrastructure team responsible for the long-term health, scalability, and developer experience of Fullscript's core application.

Our team enables fast, reliable product development by defining and upholding engineering standards for quality, scalability, and maintainability. We take on foundational upgrades, cross-team technical work, and infrastructure projects that help product teams move quickly without compromising the stability of the platform.

Our team cares about doing things well. That means improving the systems developers work in every day, reducing friction, modernizing our stack, and making thoughtful technical decisions that support Fullscript's long-term growth.

This is how we like building software: https://builders.fullscript.com. If you share our values, we'd be excited to talk with you!
What you'll do
  • Own and improve the long-term technical health of our monorepo
  • Plan out solution designs and release strategies in collaboration with other engineering teams and stakeholders
  • Lead foundational upgrades across the stack
  • Improve code quality, application structure, maintainability, and engineering standards
  • Address scalability, reliability, and performance concerns as the product grows
  • Resolve security vulnerabilities across the application and its dependencies
  • Build and maintain shared developer tooling, CI linting, and quality-of-life improvements
  • Maintain and evolve shared infrastructure such as feature flags, end-to-end tests, and infrastructure-as-code within the monolith
  • Support product teams by solving cross-cutting technical issues
  • Act as a multiplier by unblocking other teams and improving the systems they rely on
  • Contribute through implementation, code review, technical guidance, mentorship, and documentation
What you bring to the table
  • Strong experience with Ruby or Ruby on Rails
  • You are a passionate software engineer who cares about your craft and serving other developers as your end users.
  • You are excited to learn, lead projects and want to produce the best work possible.
  • Experience designing maintainable systems and making pragmatic technical tradeoffs
  • Strong testing habits and an understanding of how tests support long-term maintainability
  • Comfort working on platform, infrastructure, tooling, or developer experience problems
  • A desire to improve engineering standards across teams
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering teams
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions, and receive feedback
Bonus if you have
  • Experience scaling or working on high-scale web applications
  • Past experience working in e-commerce or health tech sector
  • You've worked with React or GraphQL in the past
  • Experience improving CI systems, test suites, feature flag systems, or developer tooling
What we can offer you
  • Generous PTO and competitive pay
  • Fullscript's RRSP match program for financial health
  • Flexible benefits package and workplace wellness program
  • Training budget and company-wide learning initiatives
  • Discount on Fullscript catalog of products
  • Ability to work Wherever You Work Well*
*Our Wherever You Work Well philosophy means Fullscript teammates get to pick their own office - whether that's in-office, at home, or a bit of both
Compensation range

The salary range for this role is between $125,000 and $165,000 CAD. Fullscript shares salary ranges to support transparency and help candidates make informed decisions. The range shown reflects base salary only and does not include stock options, wellness stipends, or other benefits that are part of Fullscript's total rewards package.

Final compensation depends on experience, skills, and location. We review pay regularly to stay aligned with market data and internal equity. Benefits and total rewards may vary by region.
