Job Summary:

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine and specialized laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. The MLT operates and maintains laboratory equipment, ensures quality control, and follows established laboratory policies and procedures. This role requires attention to detail, adherence to safety regulations, and the ability to work effectively as part of a healthcare team.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory tests in areas such as hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Collect, prepare, and analyze specimens following established laboratory protocols.
  • Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results through strict quality control measures.
  • Record and report test results to physicians and healthcare providers promptly.
  • Maintain laboratory safety by adhering to OSHA, CLIA, and other regulatory standards (COLA).
  • Participate in proficiency testing and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Manage inventory and ensure adequate supply of laboratory reagents and materials.
  • Assist in training new staff and students as needed.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and laboratory documentation in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Requirements:

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and Microsoft Office Suite.

Education:

  • Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent preferred.

Work Conditions:

  • Standing for long periods and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, and infectious diseases.
  • Shift work, including weekends and holidays, may be required.
