Robotics Software Engineers focus on developing the software that controls robots, requiring programming and computer science skills. Mechanical Engineers design and analyze physical components of machines, including robots, emphasizing mechanics and materials. While both roles may collaborate in robotics projects, their core responsibilities and skill sets differ significantly.

What is robotics software engineering?

Robotics software engineering is the field that focuses on designing, developing, testing, and maintaining the software that controls and interacts with robotic systems. This involves programming robots to perform tasks, process sensor data, and make autonomous decisions. Robotics software engineers work with various programming languages and tools to create algorithms for navigation, perception, and manipulation. They collaborate closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration between software and robotic hardware.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Software Engineers when integrating software with hardware systems?

Robotics Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to hardware-software integration, such as managing communication latency, handling sensor noise, and ensuring real-time performance. Debugging can be complex due to the interplay between code and physical hardware, requiring close collaboration with hardware engineers. Additionally, adapting algorithms to work efficiently on embedded systems and maintaining system reliability during continuous operation are frequent hurdles in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (especially in C++ and Python), a solid understanding of algorithms, robotics theory, and a relevant degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with robotics platforms (such as ROS), simulation tools (like Gazebo or MATLAB), and version control systems is typically required, along with certifications in robotics or embedded systems being advantageous. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that set candidates apart in this collaborative and innovative field. These skills and qualifications are vital for designing, developing, and optimizing reliable robotic systems that function safely and efficiently in real-world environments.

Job description

Work Flexibility: Hybrid or Onsite
It's Time to Join Stryker!
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to support concept development within Stryker's Digital, Robotics, and Enabling Technologies organization. In this role, you will contribute to early-stage research and development efforts by designing, prototyping, and evaluating software modules and subsystems that support future product innovation.
You will apply software engineering principles to develop new concepts, assess technical feasibility, and help translate user needs into clear design inputs and specifications. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to solve technical challenges, evaluate emerging technologies, and help ensure concepts are ready to transition successfully into new product development.
This is an opportunity to contribute to innovative solutions that support clinical needs, advance Stryker's robotic and enabling technology portfolio, and help make healthcare better.
Check out our current product portfolio: Stryker Robotics
What You Will Do

  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate software modules, assemblies, and subsystems that may integrate with software, hardware, and complex system elements.
  • Translate user needs into software design inputs and specifications that guide concept direction and technical feasibility.
  • Develop prototypes, proof-of-concepts, and technical solutions to evaluate new product ideas, technologies, and capabilities.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve software design challenges using sound engineering judgment and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Evaluate potential solutions against component, subsystem, and system-level requirements.
  • Assess emerging technologies, tools, and development approaches to help solve novel technical challenges.
  • Create and review technical documentation, including requirements, software design, architecture, defects, test documentation, and transition materials.
  • Support the successful transition of concepts from feasibility into the new product development process.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including engineering, product, clinical, quality, regulatory, and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to intellectual property efforts, including invention disclosures, patent discussions, and awareness of the competitive technology landscape.
  • Help define and improve integrated development environment structures, software development workflows, and project architecture.
What You Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related discipline required.
  • 2+ years of professional software development experience is required.
  • Strong programming experience with one or more languages such as C++, JavaScript, Python, Java, or similar is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing software in a medical device, robotics, healthcare technology, or other highly regulated environment.
  • Experience developing desktop applications, including application architecture, user interface implementation, and translating designer mockups or wireframes into functional software.
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming principles, design patterns, multi-threaded development, debugging, and software testing practices.
  • Experience developing prototypes, proof-of-concepts, or early-stage product concepts.
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning concepts, technologies, or integration approaches.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to translate user needs, product requirements, or clinical needs into software solutions.
  • Understanding of software scalability, performance optimization, and cross-platform development considerations.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • $89,300 - $148,800 USD Annual.
