Robotics Perception information

What is robotics perception?

Robotics perception refers to the ability of robots to interpret and understand their environment using sensors such as cameras, LIDAR, and radar. This field combines elements of computer vision, machine learning, and sensor fusion to help robots identify objects, navigate spaces, and interact with the world safely and effectively. Robotics perception is crucial for autonomous systems like self-driving cars, drones, and industrial robots, enabling them to make decisions based on real-time data from their surroundings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics perception engineer?

To thrive as a Robotics Perception Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, machine learning, and robotics, typically supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Experience with tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), OpenCV, and programming languages such as Python or C++ is essential, along with familiarity with sensor technologies and perception algorithms. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for addressing complex challenges and collaborating effectively. These abilities ensure robust perception systems, enabling robots to interpret and interact safely and efficiently with their environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in robotics perception roles when integrating perception systems with real-world robotics applications?

A key challenge in Robotics Perception is ensuring that perception algorithms—such as object detection, mapping, and localization—operate reliably in dynamic, unstructured environments. Professionals often need to address sensor noise, variable lighting conditions, and occlusions that can impact data quality. Integrating perception systems with robotic hardware requires close collaboration with mechanical, software, and controls engineers to ensure real-time performance and robustness. Adapting solutions to different platforms and continuously validating them in field tests is also an essential, ongoing responsibility.

What is the difference between Robotics Perception vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectRobotics PerceptionRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related fields; experience with perception algorithmsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; programming skills in C++, Python
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departments, industry settings focused on sensor data processingDevelopment teams, industrial or research settings, focusing on software development for robots
Industry UsageUsed in autonomous vehicles, drones, and robotic systems for environment understandingDevelops the software that enables robotic functionalities, including perception modules

Robotics Perception specialists focus on developing algorithms that interpret sensor data to understand the environment, while Robotics Software Engineers build the overall software systems that incorporate perception modules. Both roles often collaborate but differ in their core focus and skill sets.

Job description

Company Background

Specter is creating a software-defined “control plane” for the physical world. We are starting with protecting American businesses by granting them ubiquitous perception over their physical assets.

To do so, we are creating a connected hardware-software ecosystem on top of multi-modal wireless mesh sensing technology. This allows us to drive down the cost and time of deploying sensors by 10x. Our platform will ultimately become the perception engine for a company’s physical footprint, enabling real-time perimeter visibility and autonomous operations management.

Our co-founders Xerxes and Philip are passionate about empowering our partners in the fast approaching world of physical AI and robotics. We are a small, fast growing team who hail from Anduril, Tesla, Uber, and the U.S. Special Forces.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Global Supply Manager to lead sourcing and supplier management for Electronics, with primary ownership of PCBA and harness sourcing and responsibility for building strategic relationships with key silicon and memory suppliers. This role will be responsible for developing and executing global sourcing strategies, securing supply and competitive pricing for critical components, driving cost and risk optimization, and partnering cross-functionally to support product development and production scale.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in electronics supply chains, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to operate in fast-paced, high-growth environments.

ResponsibilitiesPCBA & Harness Sourcing
  • Own the global sourcing strategy for PCBAs and harnesses, including the end-to-end tactical work of placing Purchase Orders

  • Lead supplier selection, RFPs/RFQs, negotiations, and contract execution for PCBA and harness suppliers

  • Drive total cost of ownership (TCO) improvements including pricing, tooling, logistics, yield, and lifecycle cost

  • Lead supplier performance management across cost, quality, and delivery

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with contract manufacturers and manufacturing partners

Strategic Silicon & Memory Supply
  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with key silicon and memory suppliers to secure long-term supply assurance and competitive pricing

  • Negotiate and manage long-term agreements, pricing structures, capacity reservations, and supply commitments with semiconductor and memory partners

  • Track market trends for silicon, memory, and compute components (technology shifts, pricing, capacity, allocation dynamics) and translate them into sourcing strategy

  • Identify and mitigate supply, geopolitical, and capacity risks through dual sourcing, buffer strategies, and contingency planning

Cross-Functional Partnership & NPI
  • Partner closely with Engineering, Hardware, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, and Operations teams

  • Support NPI (New Product Introduction) efforts from concept through mass production

  • Ensure sourcing strategies align with technical requirements, timelines, and production ramp plans

  • Provide supply chain input on design-for-cost, design-for-manufacturability, and component standardization

Process & Systems
  • Drive process/systems improvement pertaining to spend tracking, structured PO placement, and supplier invoice reconciliation

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across sourcing processes and systems

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field

  • 3-5 years of experience in global sourcing, supply chain, or commodity management

  • Proven experience managing electronics

  • Strong negotiation skills with demonstrated cost reduction and value creation results

  • Experience working with global suppliers and contract manufacturers

  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-moving, cross-functional environments with a high degree of ambiguity
