Robotics Software Engineer Internship information

What is a robotics software engineer internship?

A Robotics Software Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working with robotics software. Interns typically assist in developing, testing, and debugging software that controls robots or robotic systems. They may work with programming languages such as Python, C++, or ROS (Robot Operating System) and collaborate with hardware and engineering teams. This internship helps participants build practical skills, expand their professional network, and gain exposure to real-world robotics projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a robotics software engineer intern?

As a Robotics Software Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects such as developing and testing algorithms for robot navigation, perception, or manipulation. Your daily tasks may include coding in languages like C++ or Python, collaborating with hardware engineers, and participating in code reviews or team meetings. Interns often contribute to both simulation and on-robot testing environments, gaining hands-on experience with robotics platforms. This role provides opportunities to learn from experienced engineers and can lead to full-time positions if you demonstrate strong technical and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics software engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid grounding in programming (especially C++ or Python), robotics fundamentals, and coursework in computer science, electrical, or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System), version control systems like Git, and simulation tools such as Gazebo is highly beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and a collaborative mindset help you stand out when working on cross-functional teams and tackling complex robotic challenges. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently developing, testing, and implementing robotic solutions in dynamic, real-world settings.

What is the difference between Robotics Software Engineer Internship vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectRobotics Software Engineer InternshipRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Computer Science, Robotics, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, or related disciplines
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in research labs or tech companies, with mentorshipFull-time professional role in engineering teams, often in industrial or research settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training and talent development in roboticsStandard role for developing and maintaining robotics software in industry and research

The main difference is that a Robotics Software Engineer Internship is a temporary, training-focused position for students or recent graduates, while a Robotics Software Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring more experience and responsibility in developing robotics software.

Description

Space Tango is an innovative space technology small business based in Lexington, Ky. Space Tango's mission is to manufacture health and technology products in space that create value and transformational solutions.ย  Space Tango provides space-based automated facilities and payloads to support research and development and small-scale manufacturing needs of our partners and customers in the Low Earth Orbit environment and beyond.ย  As a leader in automated systems, Space Tango pursues pathways to on-orbit production.ย  Our vision is to inspire, innovate, and create a better future for humanity by utilizing the environment of space.ย

Theย Software Engineer IIIย position serves as a technical lead responsible for the design, development, integration, testing, and continual improvement of software systems to execute the intended goals of specific spaceflight projects and Internal Research And Development (IRAD) projects. This role develops full-stack applications, backend services, user interfaces, automation tools, and mission software that enable research, manufacturing, and autonomous operations in microgravity. The position serves as the Software Engineering functional team representative for specific projects throughout the lifecycle process from concept ideation through return from flight and ensuring that assigned projects adhere to the Space Tango architecture, processes, and quality standards.

Travel may be required to support launches, customer activities, partner integrations, and mission operations. Because Space Tango's business centers around spaceflight missions, candidates should be comfortable supporting non-standard work schedules, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and other non-nominal hours when required for launch campaigns, testing, or on-orbit operations. The Lead Engineer position also includes a technical specialty/focus area in which the individual is expected to be the company's subject matter expert.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

  • Design, develop, integrate, test, maintain, and enhance full-stack software supporting Space Tango payloads, facilities, and mission operations.ย ย
  • Develop modern backend services, APIs, databases, automation tools, and user interfaces using Python and related technologies.ย ย
  • Design software architectures that are reliable, scalable, maintainable, and reusable across multiple projects.ย ย
  • Develop new software capabilities while maintaining and enhancing existing software platforms supporting active spaceflight missions.ย ย
  • Collaborate with science, software, electrical, mechanical, and mission operations teams to translate technical and scientific objectives into practical software solutions.ย ย
  • Support software integration, verification, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting throughout the project lifecycle.ย
  • Develop software that interfaces with hardware systems, robotics, laboratory automation, scientific instruments, and payload control systems.ย ย
  • Apply prompt engineering, automation, and modern software tools to improve engineering productivity and software quality.ย ย
  • Evaluate emerging software technologies and recommend improvements to Space Tango's software architecture, development practices, and engineering processes.ย ย
  • Serve as a technical lead by establishing software best practices, mentoring engineers, conducting design reviews, and contributing to long-term software strategy.ย
