Job Title: Senior Geotechnical Engineer 

Reporting directly to the Manager, Technical Services, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight of geotechnical engineering programs supporting the safe and efficient development and operation of the Eskay Creek Project. 

Responsibilities (including but not limited to): 

Operations Readiness: 

  • Develop and implement geotechnical monitoring, inspection, and reporting programs in preparation for operations.
  • Establish geotechnical systems, standards, procedures, and documentation to support operational readiness.
  • Support the development of Ground Control Management Plans, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), and risk management frameworks.
  • Coordinate baseline geotechnical investigations, data collection, and instrumentation programs.
  • Work collaboratively with Mine Planning, Geology, Survey, Tailings & Water Management, and external consultants to support project advancement.
  • Participate in design reviews and operational planning activities to ensure geotechnical risks are identified and mitigated.

Operations: 

  • Provide geotechnical support for open pit slope design, monitoring, and stability management.
  • Lead geotechnical face mapping, structural logging, rock mass characterization, and data interpretation programs.
  • Conduct and review slope stability assessments using industry-standard analytical and numerical modeling techniques.
  • Provide technical oversight of waste rock dumps, stockpiles, PAG storage areas, and associated geotechnical controls.
  • Support management of geotechnical risks associated with historical underground mine workings, crown pillars, and subsidence hazards.
  • Oversee monitoring instrumentation programs including slope radar, extensometers, piezometers, inclinometers, robotic total stations, and prism networks.
  • Coordinate geotechnical investigations and response plans when monitoring thresholds are exceeded.
  • Provide practical geotechnical recommendations to support mine planning, drill and blast activities, and operational decision-making.
  • Maintain geotechnical databases, QA/QC processes, and technical documentation.

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management: 

  • Ensure compliance with applicable permits, regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and corporate policies.
  • Develop and maintain Ground Control Management Plans and geotechnical risk management processes.
  • Support annual regulatory reporting requirements and compliance submissions.
  • Coordinate Engineer of Record (EoR) site visits and ensure recommendations are implemented and tracked to completion.
  • Identify, assess, and proactively mitigate geotechnical risks impacting safety, operations, and infrastructure.

Leadership & Collaboration: 

  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers, geologists, and technical staff.
  • Serve as the primary geotechnical resource for Operations, Mine Planning, Technical Services, Survey, contractors, and consultants.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Foster a collaborative, safety-focused, and high-performance culture across the organization.

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • All other duties as reasonably assigned.

The Ideal Candidate 

Education / Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Mining, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for registration.
  • Post-graduate education in geotechnical engineering would be considered an asset.

Experience / Skills: 

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience in open pit mining operations.
  • Experience with pit slope design, stability assessments, and mine waste facility geotechnics.
  • Proficiency with geotechnical software including Dips, Slide2/Slide3, SWedge, RS2, FLAC, or similar applications.
  • Strong understanding of structural geology, oriented core logging, rock mass characterization, and geotechnical investigations.
  • Experience managing and interpreting geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation programs.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical hazards related to historical underground workings, subsidence, and crown pillars is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies, Engineers of Record, and multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly, listen actively, and collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work cooperatively, support colleagues, and contribute to a positive, inclusive work environment.
  • Adaptable and able to respond to changing conditions, learn quickly, and solve problems effectively.

Work Location & Conditions 

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.       

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena’s Travel Policy.      

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.       

Compensation 
The expected salary range for this position is CAD 140,000-180,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
