What does a Robotics Design Engineer do?

A Robotics Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing robotic systems and components. They use principles from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to create robots that can perform specific tasks or functions. Their work involves creating blueprints, modeling designs, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the robots meet performance and safety standards. Robotics Design Engineers also troubleshoot and refine prototypes, ensuring their reliability and efficiency before deployment. This role is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering, usually with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills help set candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure the effective design, integration, and troubleshooting of advanced robotic systems for diverse applications.

Is robotics a dead field?

Robotics Design Engineers are in demand as robotics continues to advance across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. The field requires skills in programming, mechanical design, and control systems, and job opportunities are expected to grow with ongoing technological innovation.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in technology and energy sectors.

What is the difference between Robotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; often certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; professional engineering license (PE) optional)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, robotics development facilities, manufacturing settingsManufacturing plants, design offices, research labs
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, research institutionsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design
Common Search/ComparisonRobotics Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer

Robotics Design Engineers focus on creating robotic systems, integrating sensors, actuators, and control systems, often requiring knowledge of electronics and programming. Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical components and systems, with a broader scope across various industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Design Engineers typically have specialized skills in robotics and automation, making them distinct yet overlapping with Mechanical Engineers in certain projects.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior robotics design engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in CAD, control systems, and programming, and often holding advanced degrees or certifications can earn $300,000 or more annually. Such high salaries are typically found in specialized industries like aerospace, defense, or high-tech manufacturing, especially in senior or leadership roles.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Design Engineers when transitioning prototypes to mass production?

Robotics Design Engineers often encounter challenges when moving from prototype development to mass production, such as ensuring component reliability, optimizing designs for manufacturability, and maintaining cost efficiency without sacrificing performance. They must collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to refine product designs, address supply chain constraints, and ensure that regulatory standards are met. Effective communication and iterative testing are essential to identify and resolve issues early, facilitating a smoother transition to large-scale manufacturing.

What do robotics engineers design?

Robotics engineers design robotic systems and components such as sensors, actuators, control systems, and mechanical structures. They develop prototypes, create detailed schematics, and use programming languages like C++ or Python to ensure functionality and integration within automation environments.

Job description

Automation Systems Architect & Senior Robotics Design Engineer (OEM)

Up to $120,000 Base Salary • Greater Milwaukee Area (Brown Deer Vicinity) • 100% Onsite

EXPERIENCE DEPTH: Minimum of 3+ years of dedicated, hands-on success specifically in custom automated equipment engineering (not consumer products, electronic components, or medical scanning devices).

EDUCATION CORE: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) OR 5+ years of direct, custom industrial machine design-build experience is a strict requirement.

CAD PLATFORM: Direct, current proficiency in SolidWorks for complex machinery layout, large assemblies, and mechanism design (the firm is actively transitioning to a 100% SolidWorks ecosystem).

FLUID POWER FOCUS: Practical application of fluid power design practices, with direct experience specifying advanced hydraulic and pneumatic systems tailored to heavy structural automation.

COMPENSATION: Up to $120,000 baseline starting salary (scaling with technical depth) + premium corporate benefits package + high-growth advancement track.

LOCATION: Brown Deer, WI area (100% onsite advanced production and engineering facility; must reside within a 45-minute daily commuting radius).

COMPLIANCE: United States Citizens or Green Card holders only.

This is an opportunity to join a highly agile, employee-oriented automation powerhouse that is scaling rapidly into a premier original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Architecting ground-up, multi-million dollar automated systems for global manufacturing giants across the United States and Europe, this company operates a close-knit, highly collaborative culture completely free of multi-layered corporate bureaucracy.

This senior-track position is designed for an inventive engineer who thrives on the challenge of true "blank page" design and wants to escape the monotony of standard product modifications or repetitive part updates. As one of just five lead engineers on an elite innovation team, you will direct high-speed robotic work cell builds from a blank sheet of paper. Because the state-of-the-art engineering suite sits directly alongside a modern production floor, you will experience the distinct professional satisfaction of watching your custom creations physically fabricated, wired, and debugged right in front of you. With expanding market demand and a clear trajectory for technical leadership, this position offers high corporate visibility and an exceptional career runway.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Custom Machine Conception: Leading the mechanical design integrity, engineering approach, and financial profitability for highly complex, custom machine design-build projects.
  • Specification Translation: Partnering directly with Project Managers during initial concept reviews to translate unique customer machine specifications into innovative, high-margin, and cost-effective automation solutions.
  • Design Supervision: Structuring and breaking down complex mechanical design initiatives into manageable milestones, supervising the workflows of both in-house detailers and external engineering houses.
  • Fluid Power Architecture: Applying sound fluid power design practices, specifying advanced hydraulic and pneumatic components tailored to the precise structural needs of each unique build.
  • Risk Mitigation Engineering: Conducting early-stage risk assessments to proactively identify and engineer out potential safety hazards, mechanical pinch points, or component accessibility roadblocks.
  • Client Technical Alignment: Managing high-level technical communications with global corporate clients to ensure target machine cycle times meet rigorous international standards.
  • Production Floor Collaboration: Facilitating real-time corrective actions on the shop floor and maintaining strict engineering release schedules to keep active projects completely on budget and on time.
What We Are Looking For
  • Custom Design Pedigree: A comprehensive grasp of machine tool dynamics, advanced material science, and mechanical power transmission concepts applied to specialized industrial equipment.
  • Advanced Manufacturing Literacy: Direct exposure to industrial welding processes (GMAW, GTAW, Laser) and high-speed multi-axis automated assembly procedures.
  • Project Leadership Aptitude: A proven ability to successfully manage strict project timelines, coordinate design budgets, and direct a small, dedicated team of designers or technical detailers.
  • Employment Reliability: A rock-solid, dependable work history that demonstrates career longevity and multi-year tenures with previous employers; a pattern of changing jobs every two years will not be evaluated.
