How much do robotic systems engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for robotic systems engineer in the United States is $105,605.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,500.00 and $127,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by robotic systems engineers when integrating robots into existing workflows?

Robotic Systems Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating robots into established workflows, such as ensuring seamless communication between new robotic systems and legacy equipment, addressing safety concerns, and minimizing downtime during deployment. Adaptation to rapidly evolving technologies and troubleshooting compatibility issues can also be complex. Close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including software developers, mechanical engineers, and operations staff, is crucial for successful integration and ongoing support.

Are robotic systems engineers in high demand?

Robotic systems engineers are in high demand due to the growing adoption of automation and robotics across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. They typically require skills in programming, control systems, and hardware integration, and employment opportunities are expected to grow faster than average in the coming years.

What does a robotic systems engineer do?

A Robotic Systems Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains robotic systems used in various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automotive. They integrate hardware and software components to create automated solutions that improve efficiency, safety, and precision. Their role often involves programming, troubleshooting, and collaborating with other engineers to optimize robotic performance. Additionally, they may be responsible for implementing new technologies and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What is the difference between Robotic Systems Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotic Systems EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, and testing robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning and analyzing mechanical systems across various industries
Industry UsageRobotics, automation, manufacturing, aerospace

Robotic Systems Engineers focus on designing and integrating robotic systems, requiring knowledge of electronics and programming. Mechanical Engineers work on mechanical components and systems, often with broader applications. Both roles share foundational engineering skills but differ in specialization and daily tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotic systems engineer?

To thrive as a Robotic Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with robotics programming languages (such as ROS, C++, or Python), CAD software, and control systems is essential, and certifications in robotics or automation are advantageous. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for integrating complex systems and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing, developing, and maintaining reliable robotic solutions that meet evolving industry needs.

Do robotic systems engineers get paid well?

Robotic systems engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to their specialized skills in automation, programming, and systems integration. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but they generally offer above-average compensation compared to many engineering roles.

Job description

At Serve Robotics, we’re reimagining how things move in cities. Our personable sidewalk robot is our vision for the future. It’s designed to take deliveries away from congested streets, make deliveries available to more people, and benefit local businesses.

The Serve fleet has been delighting merchants, customers, and pedestrians along the way in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta and Chicago while doing commercial deliveries. We’re looking for talented individuals who will grow robotic deliveries from surprising novelty to efficient ubiquity.

Who We Are

We are tech industry veterans in software, hardware, and design who are pooling our skills to build the future we want to live in. We are solving real-world problems leveraging robotics, machine learning and computer vision, among other disciplines, with a mindful eye towards the end-to-end user experience. Our team is agile, diverse, and driven. We believe that the best way to solve complicated dynamic problems is collaboratively and respectfully.

As a Staff Systems Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring that our robot is safe, robust, performant, and satisfies market/customer needs. You will own the decomposition of requirements, architectures, and specifications of an autonomous last-mile delivery robot, from high-level system requirements and architecture all the way to low-level component selection criteria and performance budgets. You will serve as the glue of the organization, working across many teams and disciplines to help orchestrate the development of a complex system by breaking high-level goals down into actionable information across various functions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams to decompose system functions, behaviors, and features into actionable engineering requirements and specifications for an autonomous last-mile delivery robot

  • Facilitate the development of actionable metrics to evaluate the performance of components, subsystems, and systems throughout the robot, both in the lab and in the field

  • Develop frameworks and facilitate trade studies to optimize system and subsystem designs for performance, safety, and cost, particularly negotiating between hardware and software to find the best design solution

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams through complex root-cause analysis and resolution in which there are many possible root causes that involve various areas of engineering, using a structured approach for problem solving

  • Work closely with Systems Verification & Validation Engineers to define verification & validation plans that ensure the delivery of a safe and responsible autonomous product

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or equivalent engineering field

  • 12+ years of experience in the design and analysis of complex electromechanical and/or robotic systems

  • Experience in systems engineering and requirements management including systems analysis, requirements decomposition, and verification & validation

  • Experience in data analysis of test results including probability and statistical analysis techniques

  • Hands-on approach to the test and debugging of electromechanical systems

  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for audiences ranging from technicians to senior executives

What Makes You Standout

  • M.S., or Ph.D in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or equivalent engineering field

  • Experience in one or more of the following industries: automotive, medical, aerospace, robotics

  • Experience in autonomous systems and/or mobile robotics

  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments

Compensation Range: $195K - $240K
