Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for integrating complex systems and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing, developing, and maintaining reliable robotic solutions that meet evolving industry needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotic Systems Engineers when integrating robots into existing workflows?

Robotic Systems Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating robots into established workflows, such as ensuring seamless communication between new robotic systems and legacy equipment, addressing safety concerns, and minimizing downtime during deployment. Adaptation to rapidly evolving technologies and troubleshooting compatibility issues can also be complex. Close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including software developers, mechanical engineers, and operations staff, is crucial for successful integration and ongoing support.

What does a Robotic Systems Engineer do?

A Robotic Systems Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains robotic systems used in various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automotive. They integrate hardware and software components to create automated solutions that improve efficiency, safety, and precision. Their role often involves programming, troubleshooting, and collaborating with other engineers to optimize robotic performance. Additionally, they may be responsible for implementing new technologies and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What is the difference between Robotic Systems Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotic Systems EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, and testing robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning and analyzing mechanical systems across various industries
Industry UsageRobotics, automation, manufacturing, aerospace

Robotic Systems Engineers focus on designing and integrating robotic systems, requiring knowledge of electronics and programming. Mechanical Engineers work on mechanical components and systems, often with broader applications. Both roles share foundational engineering skills but differ in specialization and daily tasks.

Job description

Senior Systems Engineer
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Louisville, CO
Compensation: $100,000 - $160,000 / year
Description
Stratom, Inc. is a mission-driven engineering company building autonomous and unmanned off-highway vehicles and related robotic systems. Our systems operate in demanding real-world environments, where performance, reliability, and engineering discipline are essential. Integrating advanced autonomy with rugged industrial hardware for austere conditions.
Our work spans the full lifecycle of complex systems, from early concept and prototyping through fielded deployment. With multiple working prototypes in hand, we are entering the critical phase of transitioning these platforms into production over the coming years to deliver capable systems at scale. We are looking for talented and experienced engineers who want to take ownership of hard problems and play a key role in bringing multiple platforms into production.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive systems engineering leadership across the full lifecycle, from concept through deployment.
  • Develop and maintain system models using MBSE tools to define, analyze, and verify architectures in accordance with MOSA principles.
  • Lead requirements development, allocation, traceability, and verification/validation activities to ensure compliance with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to integrate hardware and software components into cohesive robotic systems.
  • Guide robotic system development with a fundamental understanding of how and why the components of a system work together to achieve an operational goal.
  • Support safety engineering activities including hazard analyses, FMEAs, and safety case development for autonomous systems.
  • Coordinate and lead cross-disciplinary integration activities across mechanical, electrical, software, and autonomy teams, ensuring interfaces are well-defined and validated.
  • Guide and mentor team members in systems engineering best practices, tool usage, and process improvement.

Qualifications
Requirements
  • A passion for designing complex industrial and autonomous systems
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in heavy industrial equipment, autonomous vehicle development, or robotics
  • Demonstrated experience acting as a systems engineer or integration lead on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Practical experience developing and managing requirements, traceability, and verification plans
  • Hands-on experience with MBSE methodologies and tools (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw or similar).
  • Knowledge of MOSA principles and ability to architect modular, extensible systems.
  • Experience supporting safety activities for automated systems, such as hazard analyses and DFMEAs
  • Willing and eager to get your hands dirty building and debugging prototype systems
  • A relevant Engineering Degree(s), such as Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, etc. Advanced degrees are a plus
  • Ability to Travel up to 20% over the year, and up to 50% in short surges

Preferred Skills
  • Experience working through (and driving) an entire product development cycle of a custom HW design - you've shipped a product
  • Exposure to supply chain/vendor engagement: evaluating components, supporting procurement, defining acceptance criteria
  • Familiarity with ROS/ROS2 and robotic algorithm integration (planning, sensor fusion, control, etc.)
  • Familiarity with relevant military and industry standards, such as MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461/464, ISO 26262, etc.
  • Ability to lead small technical teams and manage cost/schedule while ensuring technical quality.
