What is a robotic control engineer?

Robotic Control Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement control systems that enable robots to perform specific tasks efficiently and safely. They work with hardware and software to create algorithms, integrate sensors, and ensure precise movement and operation of robotic systems. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and automotive, where robots are used for automation, precision, and productivity. These engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex engineering challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotic control engineer?

To thrive as a Robotic Control Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, control systems, and programming, usually supported by a degree in electrical, mechanical, or robotics engineering. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, ROS (Robot Operating System), and PLCs, as well as specialized certifications in automation or robotics, is highly valuable. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure the design, implementation, and optimization of reliable and efficient robotic systems in complex environments.

What are some typical challenges a robotic control engineer faces when integrating new robotic systems into existing workflows?

Robotic Control Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new robotic systems and legacy equipment, optimizing control algorithms for seamless operation, and addressing unanticipated issues during live deployment. Close collaboration with mechanical engineers, software developers, and production staff is crucial to troubleshoot integration hurdles. Success in this role requires adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate technical concepts to multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Robotic Control Engineer vs Automation Engineer?

AspectRobotic Control EngineerAutomation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications in control systemsBachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; certifications in automation systems
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing robotic control systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDeveloping automation solutions across various industries, including manufacturing and process control
Industry UsagePrimarily in robotics, manufacturing, and industrial automationBroader, including manufacturing, process industries, and software automation

Robotic Control Engineers focus on designing and implementing control systems specifically for robots, while Automation Engineers develop broader automation solutions for various industrial processes. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ in their application scope and work environment.

Do robotic control engineers get paid well?

Robotic control engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to their specialized skills in automation, robotics, and control systems. Salaries vary based on experience, education, and industry, but the role generally offers above-average compensation compared to many engineering fields.

What does a robotic control engineer do?

A robotic control engineer designs, develops, and tests control systems that enable robots to perform specific tasks. They work with sensors, actuators, and programming languages to ensure precise and reliable robot operation, often using tools like MATLAB or ROS. The role typically requires knowledge of robotics, control theory, and programming skills, and may involve troubleshooting and optimizing robotic systems in manufacturing, automation, or research environments.

Job description

Job Purpose:
A robotics engineer develops the hardware and/or software that enables electro-mechanical systems to perform a series of tasks with little or no human involvement.
The robotics engineer can develop the mechanical mechanisms that form the robot, integrate sensors such as cameras and LIDAR systems into the system, or develop the algorithms to allow the robot or autonomous system to sense its environment, plan its actions, and then execute the plan.
This position contributes to the fundamental and applied understanding of robotic and autonomous systems.
The robotics researcher develops the advanced autonomous planning, coordination, perception and control algorithms that enable a mobile robot or team of robots to operate in dynamic environments.
The engineer can also interface with perceptual, actuation, communication and other systems to enable the robot to sense, plan actions, coordinate actions according to mission plans and execute the plans.
This position may incorporate a fundamental understanding of robotic control and path planning as well as an applied understanding of robotics systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform signal processing tasks with more limited direction from supervisor.
  • Develop expertise in specific areas.
  • Contribute to white papers and proposals with supporting background or data analysis.
  • Contribute to technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Perform autonomous robotic algorithm development and validation tasks with limited guidance.
  • Perform rapid simulation development, prototyping, and field-testing.
  • Generate research reports, publication, proposals, and briefs for internal and external customers.
  • Serve as technical lead on programs, driving the development and implementation of novel engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior research faculty.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
