Robot Tester information

What is a robot tester?

Robot Testers are professionals who evaluate and ensure the proper functioning, safety, and performance of robots before they are deployed for commercial or industrial use. Their responsibilities include designing test procedures, running diagnostic tests, identifying bugs or malfunctions, and collaborating with engineers to resolve issues. Robot Testers may work with a variety of robots, such as industrial robots, autonomous vehicles, or consumer robotics. Their work is essential to ensure that robots operate reliably and safely in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robot tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robot Tester, you need a solid understanding of robotics, computer science or engineering principles, and experience with test design and debugging, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), robotics frameworks (like ROS), and automated testing tools is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate identification and resolution of issues, leading to safe, reliable, and high-performing robotic systems.

What are some typical challenges faced by robot testers during the testing process?

Robot Testers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting unexpected hardware or software failures, managing frequent firmware updates, and ensuring that robots perform reliably in unpredictable real-world environments. Collaboration with engineers and developers is essential to quickly identify root causes of issues and validate solutions. Additionally, Robot Testers must stay current with evolving robotics technologies to effectively design and execute comprehensive test plans, which can be both technically demanding and rewarding.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day

As a Manufacturing Engineer – Automation & Digitalization with Siemens Energy’s Blades and Vanes team, you will lead the development and continuous improvement of advanced manufacturing automation in the investment casting facility. Your role will involve serving as the technical lead for automation projects, defining system requirements, developing specifications, evaluating suppliers, and overseeing the design, build, testing, and commissioning of automated systems. You will focus on robotics and material handling automation, including conveyor systems, pick-and-place robots, and AGV/AMR technologies. Collaboration with operations, maintenance, quality, engineering, and external suppliers will be essential to transform manufacturing processes through innovative automation technologies that enhance safety, quality, productivity, and operational excellence.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Define user requirements, functional specifications, and technical requirements for automation and robotics projects, focusing on investment casting processes such as wax operations, shell manufacturing, and material handling.
  • Design and optimize automation solutions, specifying and integrating advanced manufacturing technologies, including conveyor systems, robotic systems, machine vision, AGV/AMR solutions, and collaborative robots (cobots).
  • Develop automation architectures that incorporate PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and robotics controllers, while establishing automation standards and safety requirements in accordance with industry standards.
  • Create RFQs and technical bid packages for automation and robotic system procurements, leading supplier identification and technical evaluations to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Manage automation suppliers and system integrators through concept development, design, fabrication, installation, and startup phases, ensuring adherence to Siemens Energy standards.
  • Oversee Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), validating system performance against defined KPIs and troubleshooting integration issues to achieve targeted operational objectives.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, with 5+ years of experience in manufacturing automation, robotics, or advanced manufacturing systems (3+ years with an advanced degree).
  • Proven experience in specifying, selecting, implementing, and commissioning industrial automation equipment and robotic systems, including hands-on experience with PLC platforms (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or equivalent) and HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Experience leading automation capital projects from concept development through startup and operational handoff, including developing technical specifications, RFQs, and supplier evaluation criteria.
  • Knowledge of industrial robotics platforms (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Universal Robots, or similar) and experience integrating conveyor systems, robotic cells, machine vision systems, AGVs/AMRs, and automated material handling solutions.
  • Strong understanding of machine safety principles, risk assessments, and applicable automation standards, with experience conducting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.
  • This position may require an export license from the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. Issuance of any required license is a prerequisite for this position.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
