What is a robot design?

A Robot Design job involves creating and developing robots for various applications, including industrial automation, healthcare, and consumer products. Designers work on the mechanical structure, electrical components, and software integration to ensure functionality and efficiency. They collaborate with engineers and researchers to prototype, test, and refine robotic systems. The role requires knowledge of engineering principles, programming, and AI to build intelligent and adaptable machines.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone working in robot design?

Professionals in Robot Design typically spend their days developing detailed schematics, modeling components in CAD software, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to conceptualize and refine robotic systems. Their work involves testing prototypes, troubleshooting technical issues, and iterating designs based on performance data and project feedback. They also often participate in interdisciplinary meetings with software engineers, project managers, and clients to align project goals and timelines. Staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends is also an important part of their routine.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the robot design position, and why are they important?

To excel in Robot Design, you typically need expertise in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, often supported by a related degree or industry certification. Familiarity with CAD software, robotics simulation tools, programming languages (such as Python or C++), and rapid prototyping equipment is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the successful creation, testing, and integration of robotic systems while meeting both technical and user requirements.

How to become a robot designer?

To become a robot designer, typically a bachelor's degree in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field is required. Developing skills in CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and understanding of sensors and actuators are essential; gaining experience through internships or projects can also be beneficial.

Is robotics a high paying field?

Robotics is generally considered a high-paying field, especially for roles such as robot design engineers and automation specialists, with salaries often exceeding the national average for engineering jobs. Advanced skills in programming, mechanical design, and experience with tools like CAD and ROS can lead to higher compensation, particularly in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, and research. However, salaries vary based on experience, location, and education level.

Job description

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard - from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we work to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

We are seeking a Robot Engineer to design, develop, and implement robotic systems that enhance automation, improve efficiency, and support manufacturing operations. In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate industrial robots, troubleshoot motion control issues, and optimize programming for high-performance automation. You will also maintain and refine robotic systems to ensure seamless operation, compliance with industry standards, and minimal downtime.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead new robot program implementation and execution (SOR preparation, forecasting, controls/robotics design, equipment build/run-off and buyoff).
  • Support design, construction, integration, plant installation, successful launch, and continuous improvement of robotic systems.
  • Stay current on new controls technologies (PLC, HMI, networks, robots, vision) and support deployment of new technology to minimize risk.
  • Manage deliveries to meet program timing milestones.
  • Perform simultaneous engineering activities with Manufacturing Engineering and equipment suppliers.
  • Solve or assist with manufacturing operational controls problems as required.
  • Support deployment of best common systems and methods as defined in the Global Controls Bill of Process.
  • Develop and support advanced robotic technology solutions (cutting, joining, handling, laser, vision).
  • Provide support for safety systems, standards, and solutions, including use of DCS.
  • Drive common execution practices across projects and programs.
  • Participate in development and testing of advanced robotics technology.
  • Prepare and deliver project updates to senior management.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to less experienced controls engineers.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience in industrial automation, robotics, or vision systems (3+ years preferred).
  • Proficiency in Fanuc robot programming (TP, KAREL, HandlingTool, vision guidance).
  • PLC/HMI programming skills (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell preferred).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Ability to work effectively in both central engineering and plant environments, including time on the plant floor around operating equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Robot simulation experience (Fanuc ROBOGUIDE).
  • Experience with CNC, conveyor systems, or general automation.
  • Prior experience deploying vision-guided robotic systems in a manufacturing environment.
