What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Road Service Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Road Service Technician, you need a solid understanding of vehicle mechanics and diagnostics, often backed by a high school diploma and relevant automotive certifications. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, roadside assistance software, and mobile communication devices is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, customer service orientation, and the ability to stay calm under pressure set top performers apart. These skills ensure quick, reliable service to motorists, fostering safety and satisfaction in time-sensitive roadside situations.

What are some common challenges Road Service professionals face when assisting motorists in the field?

Road Service professionals often encounter unpredictable situations, such as inclement weather, heavy traffic, and working at night or in remote locations. They must quickly assess and resolve vehicle issues like flat tires, dead batteries, or lockouts while ensuring their own safety and that of the customers. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as technicians frequently interact with distressed motorists and may need to coordinate with tow truck operators or emergency responders.

What is a Road Service technician?

A Road Service technician is a professional who provides assistance to motorists experiencing vehicle problems while on the road. Their duties typically include helping with flat tires, jump-starting batteries, unlocking vehicles, delivering fuel, and sometimes performing minor mechanical repairs on-site. Road Service technicians work for roadside assistance companies, automotive clubs, or towing services, and are trained to respond quickly and effectively to get drivers back on the road safely. They often work in varying weather conditions and may be on call during nights and weekends.

What is the difference between Road Service vs Towing Technician?

AspectRoad ServiceTowing Technician

Work EnvironmentOn-road, roadside locations, emergency situationsGarage or roadside, vehicle recovery and repair
Employer & IndustryAuto clubs, roadside assistance companies, insurance providersTow companies, auto repair shops, roadside assistance services

Road Service technicians primarily assist stranded drivers by providing on-the-spot help such as jump-starts, tire changes, or fuel delivery. Towing Technicians focus on transporting vehicles from one location to another, often involving vehicle recovery and repair. While both roles require roadside presence and similar credentials, their core responsibilities differ, with Road Service emphasizing immediate roadside aid and Towing Technicians specializing in vehicle transportation.

Job description

Job description:
Road Service Manager
Location: Field-Based / On-the-Road
Company: Road Runner Wrecker Service, Inc.
About Us
Since 1992, Road Runner Wrecker Service, Inc. has earned its reputation as the go-to provider for towing, recovery, and roadside assistance throughout the Midโ€‘Atlantic. With a modern fleet and a commitment to rapid, reliable response, we're dedicated to supporting drivers when they need it most.
Your Role
As the Road Service Manager, you'll lead our frontline heroes-our Road Service Mechanics-ensuring prompt, effective, and safe operations across the region. You'll be the strategic and operational backbone, managing personnel, optimizing service workflows, and maintaining high-quality service delivery. This role is field-focused-you'll be on the road, actively engaging with operations and supporting the team in real time.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and support a team of mobile mechanics, providing coaching, escalation management, and performance guidance.
  • Operate both in the field and at the Shop, spending significant time on the road to oversee operations, support mechanics during calls, and ensure smooth logistics.
  • Coordinate service operations, including dispatch optimization, response-time tracking, and resource allocation for breakdowns, emergencies, and onโ€‘theโ€‘spot repairs.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, vehicle maintenance standards, and customer-first operational excellence.
  • Oversee inventory logistics, guaranteeing service trucks are fully stocked and parts usage is accurately tracked.
  • Utilize diagnostic and mobile tools to assist the team in troubleshooting effectively.
  • Serve as a key point of contact between dispatch, mechanics, and customers-communicating updates, status changes, and critical escalations.
  • Drive continuous improvement, refining processes, response strategies, and team training to elevate operational performance.

What You Bring
  • Proven leadership experience-ideally managing mobile or roadside repair teams.
  • Willingness and ability to spend a significant portion of your time working in the field, including traveling to various locations as required.
  • Solid mechanical knowledge spanning light and heavyโ€‘duty vehicles-diesel engines, electrical, air brakes, hydraulics.
  • Strong familiarity with diagnostic tools, emergency repair protocols (batteries, belts, hoses, tires, brakes, air lines), and inventory control.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to operate under pressure in dynamic settings.
  • Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
  • Superior communication skills and a customerโ€‘focused mindset.

Why Road Runner?
  • Be the director behind a team of real-life heroes, keeping vehicles and drivers safely on the road.
  • Competitive salary with performance-based incentives & bonuses.
  • Fully equipped, well-maintained service vehicles for your team.
  • A collaborative, supportive team environment with room for growth and leadership.
  • Work with a company that brings over 30 years of service excellence and a solid reputation.

How to Apply
Ready to take the lead and ensure our roadside heroes can deliver exceptional service-while being out in the field where the action happens? Submit your resume and a brief cover letter highlighting your leadership and field-based mechanical experience. We look forward to meeting our next Road Service Manager-someone who excels under pressure, champions safety, and makes every call count.
