What is a Right of Way Intern?

A Right of Way Intern is a student or recent graduate who assists professionals in securing legal rights to use land for public or private projects, such as roads, utilities, or pipelines. Interns typically help with property research, document preparation, data entry, and communication with property owners. This role provides hands-on experience in real estate, land acquisition, and project management. Right of Way Interns often work under the supervision of experienced agents or project managers to learn about legal, regulatory, and negotiation processes. The experience gained can lead to full-time opportunities in right of way or related fields.

The main difference between a Right Of Way Intern and a Right Of Way Technician lies in experience and responsibilities. Familiarity with GIS software, document management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork skills help interns interact with property owners and support project teams. These skills are critical to ensure accurate documentation, smooth negotiations, and compliance with legal and regulatory standards in infrastructure projects.

What types of projects and tasks can a Right of Way Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Right of Way Intern, you will typically assist with research, document preparation, and fieldwork related to land acquisition for public infrastructure projects. Your tasks might include reviewing property records, supporting negotiations with landowners, helping prepare reports or maps, and coordinating with engineers, surveyors, and legal teams. This hands-on experience will give you a strong understanding of how land rights are managed for projects like highways, utilities, and pipelines. You’ll also gain exposure to regulatory compliance and the importance of effective communication in team settings.
