Job description

J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers is looking for experienced welders for our Cumberland, MD shop who set up and operate equipment to weld together fabricated metal components of products such as truck bodies, trailers, specialty vehicles, and related subassemblies; and custom fabrications made of carbon steel and aluminum using the GMAW and FCAW process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely perform duties, always wearing the required PPE
  • Observes and complies with all provisions of the ISO 9001 QMS
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by training, or by foreman.
  • Starts the power supply to produce an electric current.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joints or workpieces.
  • Prepares objects for welding by grinding surfaces.
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assemble them in a jig or fixture. Fit up simple assemblies
  • Preheat the workpiece if/when required.
  • Strikes (forms) arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of the workpiece.
  • Manually guides gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Set up and adjust welder, and perform routine maintenance such as replacing spools of wire & changing out liners.
  • Safely operate all lifting devices such as overhead & jib cranes and fork trucks when authorized & adequately trained.

Education and Experience:

  • Vocational/technical training needed or a high school diploma or general education degree with work experience in an industrial setting.
