Rigging Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rigging manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rigging Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of rigging principles, heavy lifting operations, and relevant safety regulations, often supported by certifications such as NCCCO or equivalent. Familiarity with rigging hardware, load calculation software, and safety management systems is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set top candidates apart in managing teams and ensuring safe operations. These skills and qualifications are critical for minimizing risk, ensuring project efficiency, and maintaining compliance in environments where safety is paramount.

What is a rigging manager?

Rigging managers are professionals responsible for overseeing all aspects of rigging operations in industries like entertainment, construction, or manufacturing. They coordinate and supervise the setup, maintenance, and safety of rigging equipment used to lift, move, or secure heavy loads or stage elements. Rigging managers ensure compliance with safety standards, manage rigging crews, and often work closely with engineers, event organizers, or production teams. Their expertise helps prevent accidents and ensures that all rigging tasks are completed efficiently and safely.

How does a rigging manager typically collaborate with other departments during large-scale productions?

A Rigging Manager works closely with departments such as lighting, sound, and set design to ensure all rigging elements are safely and efficiently integrated into the production. They coordinate schedules, communicate technical requirements, and address safety protocols with team leads to prevent overlaps or hazards. Effective collaboration requires regular meetings, clear documentation, and adaptability, as last-minute changes often occur. This teamwork is essential for achieving seamless load-ins, performances, and load-outs on major events or productions.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Millwright / Fabrication Technician to join our growing team at Spartan Facilities Management. This hands-on role supports our industrial maintenance, equipment installation, and custom fabrication projects in a fast-paced commercial and food-grade manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical expertise and can independently measure, design, and fabricate safety guarding, handrails, platforms, and related structural components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform millwright duties including installation, alignment, maintenance, and repair of industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Accurately measure existing structures and equipment to fabricate custom guarding, handrails, platforms, stairs, and access structures.
  • Fabricate components using steel, stainless steel, and other materials — including cutting, forming (press brake), welding (TIG/MIG), and assembly.
  • Install and modify safety guarding, machine barriers, and access platforms while ensuring compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and site-specific safety standards.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Collaborate with production teams to minimize downtime during installations and modifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment (GMP/SQF awareness a plus).
  • Participate in equipment moves, rigging, and general facilities support as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Proven Millwright experience (3+ years preferred) in industrial or manufacturing settings.
  • Strong fabrication skills: ability to measure in the field, layout work, and build functional, code-compliant guarding, handrails, and platforms.
  • Proficient with common shop tools: press brake, fiber laser (or similar), welders, ironworkers, torches, grinders, etc.
  • Experience working with structural steel, stainless steel, and safety-related fabrications.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs., work at heights, and operate in varying shop/plant conditions.
  • Strong safety mindset with LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) and rigging knowledge.
  • Welding certifications (e.g., AWS) and/or formal millwright training are a plus.
