Position Overview

The University of Tennessee Southern enthusiastically invites applications for the role ofย Instructor of Rhetoric and Composition and Writingย Curriculum Coordinator.ย As UT Southern develops and refines curriculumย in the area ofย rhetoric and composition, this role willย oversee writing studies curriculum development, ensure alignment with best practices in rhetoric and composition,ย and play a pivotal role inย maintainingย a strong relationship with our dual enrollment community partners.ย ย 

Theย Instructor of Rhetoric and Composition will teach composition courses and serve as the inauguralย Writing Curriculum Coordinator.ย The successful candidateย willย bring classroom expertise and innovative ideas for developingย courses inย writingย studies.ย We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and visionary educator who is invested in student success and eager to help shape new initiatives such as embedded peer tutoringย in developmental courses, writing certificate programs, workshops on navigating AI in the composition classroom, or other initiatives as pertains to the candidate's area of expertise.ย ย 

Teaching duties include instruction in introductory writing courses, including dual enrollment sections, as well as upper-level courses asย appropriate. In the coordinator role, responsibilitiesย mayย include leading grade norming sessions,ย facilitatingย composition best-practices workshops, liaising with the Student Resource Center,ย maintainingย current composition learning outcomes, supporting general education assessment, and helpingย establishย course placement criteria.ย 

This is a full-time, 9-month, in-personย teachingย position at theย Instructorย rank.ย

Required Qualifications:

Candidates mustย possessย a strong commitment to teaching, working with college-ready and underprepared students, and serving the university through writing programย administration.ย 

  • Master's Degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, English, or a closely related fieldย 
  • Ability to teach in an enthusiastic, professional, and organized manner across multiple modalitiesย in order toย reach as many students as possibleย 
  • Experience in Writing Program Administration or graduate training in rhetoric and compositionย ย 
  • Ability to work effectively on a teamย 
  • Excellent communication skillsย 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, English, or a closely related fieldย 
  • Experience teaching dual enrollmentย ย 
  • Experience teaching technical and/or professional writing is welcomeย 

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:ย 

  • Teach a 5/5 course load with a course release for serving as Writingย Curriculumย Coordinatorย ย 
  • Teach introductory composition coursesย ย 
  • Teach dual enrollment sectionsย 
  • Design and teach upper-level writing or English courses asย appropriateย and asย determinedย by departmental needย 
  • Serve as the inauguralย Writing Curriculum Coordinator, helping toย establishย best practices, procedures, and a long-term vision forย writing studies at UTSย 
  • Develop and lead newย compositionย initiatives, which may include embedded peer tutoring, writing certificate programs, or other projects aligned with the candidate'sย expertiseย 
  • Lead grade norming sessions andย facilitateย composition best-practice workshopsย 
  • Maintain and regularly update composition learning outcomes to reflect current standards and pedagogical developmentย 
  • Participate in program and departmental meetings, faculty governance, and institutional service asย assignedย 
  • Work within the English program to support writing instruction and initiatives, in coordination with the Program Director and Department Head.ย
