Job description

The Compliance Engineer III (Electronics) ensures that products meet all applicable UL safety standards and FCC electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio frequency (RF) regulations. In this role, the engineer leads compliance planning throughout the product lifecycle, partnering with design, hardware, and firmware teams to define requirements, evaluate design decisions, and mitigate risks early in the development cycle. They prepare test plans, coordinate internal pre-compliance evaluations, and manage relationships with third-party laboratories to complete formal certification testing. This position also involves maintaining a deep understanding of evolving UL and FCC requirements and translating them into clear, actionable guidance for engineering teams.

Beyond testing and documentation, the Compliance Engineer drives continuous improvement in compliance processes, ensuring efficient product approvals and reducing costly redesign cycles. They develop and maintain technical files, regulatory documentation, declarations of conformity, and risk assessments to support product launches and audits. The role requires strong analytical skills, excellent communication across technical and non-technical groups, and the ability to balance safety, performance, and regulatory constraints in complex electronic control systems.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience with electronic controls development including compliance management.
  • Experience with change control of manufactured components which require compliance management
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting technical procedures and government/agency regulations (UL, CSA, CE, FCC, etc.)
  • Able to work successfully with multiple departments such as R&D, marketing, manufacturing, service engineering, suppliers, and customers.
  • Technical knowledge of product design and compliance testing methods
  • Working knowledge of statistical methods and/or Design-of-Experiments (DOE)
  • Familiarity with multiple communications media and protocol such as wired, wireless, optic, CAN, BACnet, Modbus, TCP/IP.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote
  • Must possess and demonstrate proficiency in the following competencies:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Electrical, Systems, Safety, or Reliability Engineering or equivalent technical degree
  • Experience with creating compliance management processes and systems for small to medium sized engineering organizations
  • Experience with control designs utilizing Renesas microcontrollers, RS-485 communication, LCDs, Bluetooth and/or cellular communications, low power, and analog circuitry.
  • Experience utilizing a formal Product Development Process
  • Work Experience in a test laboratory or compliance agency
  • Experience in performing radiated & conducted emissions/susceptibility testing, and results analysis.

  • Work with product management, controls engineering, and compliance organizations to capture electronic controls compliance activities for electronic controls in HVAC and water heating applications.
  • Develop controls compliance certification plans and work with compliance organizations and 3rd party testing partners to execute and document control compliance.
  • Work with cross-functional teams through direct interactions and team meetings in completing compliance activities and bringing compliant products into production.
  • Participate in formal design reviews of electronic controls requirements, schematics, layouts, as well as FMEA, DFM, DFT, and other related analyses
  • Prepare and support the review and release of formal requirements, design, and qualification documentation.
  • Work with contract manufacturers to prepare for product builds, including review of design documentation and testing requirements and overseeing technical aspects of qualification builds.
  • Continue to develop professionally. Represent company as requested in technical societies and keep the company advised of pertinent developments, new concepts, and opportunities.
