Job description

Job Title: Linux Systems Administrator (Mid-Tier)
Clearance Required: Public Trust US Citizen
Work Location: Silver Spring, MD (Hybrid) Alpha Omega is seeking a qualified Linux Systems Administrator in support of our NOAA customer. In this role, this individual will design, implementation, administration, and sustainment of enterprise Linux-based systems within a mission-critical IT environment. This role operates at a journeyman level, performing independent system administration tasks while also supporting senior engineers on complex infrastructure initiatives. The ideal candidate will have 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience ensuring system availability, security compliance, performance optimization, and operational continuity across Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) server environments supporting enterprise applications and services. Key Responsibilities: * Administer, maintain, and support Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) server environments and equivalent enterprise distributions. * Perform routine system administration tasks including patching, upgrades, user management, storage administration, and service monitoring. * Manage system performance tuning and capacity optimization across physical and virtual environments. * Support virtualization platforms (OVirt, KVM, OpenShift, etc.) and Linux-based guest systems. * Implement security hardening standards aligned with organizational, federal, and STIG requirements. * Support vulnerability remediation, including patch management, configuration adjustments, and RMF compliance reporting. * Develop and maintain scripts using Bash, Python, or similar tools to automate system administration tasks. * Utilize configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, or equivalent) to support infrastructure-as-code practices. * Monitor system health, logs, and alerts using enterprise monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix, Splunk, or similar). * Respond to incidents, troubleshoot system outages, participate in root cause analysis, and participate in on-call rotations as required. * Work closely with network, storage, and application teams to support integrated system environments. * Provide technical support to users and internal IT teams, and document system configurations, procedures, and operational workflows. * Independently execute routine and moderately complex tasks, troubleshooting infrastructure issues with minimal supervision. * Escalate appropriately when issues exceed standard operational scope. Required Qualifications: Required Experience/Skills: * Minimum Years of Overall Experience: 3 * Minimum Years of Specific Experience in Field: 3 * Experience supporting Linux systems in an enterprise environment. * Strong understanding of Linux OS architecture and administration in enterprise environments. * Experience supporting RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu Server, or equivalent distributions. * Experience working in virtualized environments (VMware, KVM, or similar). * Experience with system patching, user management, storage, and service administration. * Proficiency with command-line tools and shell scripting (Bash required). * Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible preferred). * Familiarity with monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix, Splunk, or similar). * Understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, TCP/IP, routing basics). * Demonstrated reliability in maintaining system availability and compliance posture. Desired Skills: * Proficiency with Python scripting. * Experience supporting federal or regulated IT environments. * Familiarity with STIG hardening and RMF compliance processes. * Experience with cloud-hosted Linux environments (AWS, Azure, or similar). * Experience supporting container platforms such as Docker or Kubernetes. Desired Certifications: * DoD 8570/8140 baseline certification (CompTIA Security+, Linux+, or equivalent). * Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or equivalent Linux/infrastructure-related certifications. Desired Certification(s): * DoD 8570/8140 baseline certification (CompTIA Security+, Linux+, or equivalent). * Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or equivalent Linux/infrastructure-related certifications.   Salary and Benefit Information: The likely salary range for this position is $xxx - $114,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position and could fall outside of this range.
