What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Validation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Validation Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, strong understanding of RF principles, and experience with circuit design and signal analysis. Familiarity with test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and simulation tools like MATLAB is typically required, along with relevant certifications like ISTQB for test processes. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret results and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring product quality, meeting regulatory standards, and driving innovation in wireless communication technologies.

What are RF Validation Engineers?

RF Validation Engineers are professionals who test and verify the performance of radio frequency (RF) components and systems, such as wireless devices, antennas, and communication modules. They design and execute validation procedures, analyze test results, and ensure that products meet industry standards and regulatory requirements. Their work involves using specialized equipment to measure parameters like signal strength, frequency response, and interference. RF Validation Engineers collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize product performance. This role is essential in industries like telecommunications, consumer electronics, and automotive, where reliable wireless communication is critical.

What is the difference between Rf Validation Engineer vs Rf Test Engineer?

AspectRf Validation EngineerRf Test Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF or CommunicationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Communications
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, testing facilities, R&D teamsTesting labs, production lines, field testing
Industry UsageWireless, telecommunications, mobile devicesWireless, telecommunications, mobile devices
Primary FocusValidating RF performance and complianceExecuting RF tests and troubleshooting

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in related environments within the wireless and telecom industries. The Rf Validation Engineer focuses on validating RF systems and ensuring compliance, while the Rf Test Engineer primarily executes tests and troubleshoots RF issues. They often collaborate but have distinct responsibilities in the RF development process.

What are the main challenges faced by RF Validation Engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams during product development?

RF Validation Engineers often work closely with design, firmware, and test engineering teams to ensure products meet wireless performance standards. One common challenge is aligning validation timelines with fast-paced development cycles, which can require balancing thorough testing with tight deadlines. Effective communication is key, as RF issues may involve complex interactions between hardware and software, requiring detailed documentation and clear feedback. Proactively collaborating and staying adaptable helps address unexpected problems and ensures high-quality product releases.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform lab measurements on RF and mixed signal front end ICs and create validation reports comparing results to design expectations.

  • Characterize products across process, voltage, and temperature per test plans, including configuring and maintaining test benches, instrument setups, and automation scripts.

  • Document device performance and limitations with traceable data and propose preliminary performance limits based on design verification and characterization data.

Job description

pSemi Corporation is a Murata company driving semiconductor integration. pSemi builds on Peregrine Semiconductor’s 30-year legacy of technology advancements and strong IP portfolio but with a new mission—to enhance Murata’s world-class capabilities with high-performance semiconductors. With a strong foundation in RF integration, pSemi’s product portfolio now spans power management, connected sensors, optical transceivers, antenna tuning and RF frontends. These intelligent and efficient semiconductors enable advanced modules for smartphones, base stations, personal computers, electric vehicles, data centers, IoT devices and healthcare. From headquarters in San Diego and offices around the world, pSemi’s team explores new ways to make electronics for the connected world smaller, thinner, faster and better.

Job Summary

This individual will execute design validation and characterization activities and contribute to product development of RF and mixed signal ICs in pSemi’s UltraCMOS technology for mobile wireless and consumer WIFI RF front end semiconductor products for cellular handsets and commercial/industrial applications. Product lines include high performance RF switches, PA controllers (PAC’s), power amplifiers, low noise amplifiers, digital tunable capacitors and IC filters. A successful person enjoys working cross‑functionally to set up and operate RF test benches, automate measurements, analyze data across PVT, and document results to support high‑quality product releases. The job will require understanding in RF and analog measurements combined with disciplined project planning to support the release of high-quality products. As part of a cross-functional product development team, the Engineer will support other essential disciplines including marketing and applications, project management, design, production and test engineering.  Additionally, they will work very closely with the design team to understand the part operation and device.

Roles & Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for:

  • Design Validation: Performing lab measurements on various RF and mixed signal front end IC’s (LNA, SW, PA, PAC’s, Couplers, Digital tunable capacitors and IC filters) and create validation report with comparisons vs design expectations.
  • Product Characterization: Characterize products across PVT per test plans; configure and maintain benches and fixtures, instrument setups, and calibration routines; maintain and extend existing automation scripts to improve efficiency and repeatability.
  • Product Qualification: Compile and analyze results from products being stressed for lifetime reliability.  Support bench evaluation of qualification units and escalate anomalies with clear reproduction steps and data.
  • Product Documentation: Document device performance and limitations with traceable data including conditions, scripts, and configurations for future reference by applications and customer support. Propose preliminary performance limits based on design verification and characterization data for cross‑functional review and approval.
  • Production ATE Development: Partner with Test Engineering to correlate bench measurements and the automated test solution, including golden units, correlation data sets, and issue reproduction support.
  • Product Evaluation: Support design verification by executing defined experiments, reproducing issues, and providing timely status updates.
  • Analysis Tool Development: Maintain and enhance characterization and test data analysis tools to streamline characterization (CPK analysis) and improve ATE capability understanding (GR&R)
  • Characterization Infrastructure: Configure, maintain, and incrementally improve RF validation benches, fixtures, and automation.
