How much do rf engineer jobs pay per year?
What Does an RF Engineer Do?
A radio frequency (RF) engineer's primary responsibilities are to collect data, research radio frequency, and analyze gathered information to improve radar design. Your duties have you working with intelligence sensors, surveillance radars, cellular components, over-the-horizon radar, and radio waves. You design modules and switches to improve how the electronics transmit and perform surveys and installations. You take measurements of electromagnetic emissions, install equipment, test your designs, and troubleshoot and debug to improve the radio frequency and speed. RF engineers often coordinate with technicians and other engineers to cover multiple data sites.
What is the difference between Rf Engineer vs Wireless Communications Engineer?
| Aspect | Rf Engineer | Wireless Communications Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF certifications | Bachelor's in Electrical/Communications Engineering, RF certifications |
| Work Environment | Design, testing, and optimization of RF systems | Development and deployment of wireless communication systems |
| Industry Usage | Telecom, aerospace, defense | Telecom, mobile networks, IoT |
RF Engineers focus on designing and testing RF components and systems, while Wireless Communications Engineers work on developing and implementing wireless network solutions. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, often overlap in industry applications, but differ in their specific focus areas within wireless technology.

You will play a vital role in advancing mission-critical technologies through rigorous testing, analysis, and evaluation methodologies to support national security objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
- Support RF test and evaluation activities for CUAS, EW systems, RF sensors, RF defeat capabilities, communication links, antennas, transmitters, receivers, and related test infrastructure.
- Assist in the planning, development, execution, analysis, and documentation of CUAS RF test events.
- Develop and support test objectives, test plans, test procedures, test cards, data collection plans, instrumentation plans, and post-test analysis products.
- Configure, operate, and troubleshoot RF test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, receivers, software-defined radios, antennas, vector network analyzers, data acquisition systems, and related instrumentation.
- Collect, process, and analyze RF test data to evaluate system performance, signal behavior, link characteristics, receiver sensitivity, transmit power, waveform characteristics, interference, timing, and electromagnetic environment impacts.
- Support laboratory, hardware-in-the-loop, field, and over-the-air test events involving CUAS and EW systems.
- Evaluate RF system performance against defined test requirements, operational scenarios, and mission-relevant threat conditions.
- Support RF signal analysis and exploitation activities using test instrumentation, software tools, and approved analysis methods.
- Assess wireless communication protocols, RF control links, telemetry links, command links, and signal characteristics associated with unmanned systems and CUAS test environments.
- Support RF modeling and simulation activities, including RF coverage analysis, antenna placement assessment, propagation analysis, model validation, and correlation of test data to model predictions.
- Identify test limitations, data gaps, anomalies, instrumentation issues, equipment problems, and environmental factors that may affect test validity.
- Provide engineering recommendations to improve test rigor, test repeatability, RF measurement accuracy, data collection methods, and overall test efficiency.
- Support test setup, calibration verification, equipment configuration, test execution, teardown, and post-test equipment accountability.
- Coordinate with field test teams to ensure RF equipment, antennas, sensors, targets, vehicles, communication systems, and data collection tools are properly configured and ready for test execution.
- Support operation, setup, and maintenance of RF distribution systems, antennas, RF cables, amplifiers, spectrum analyzers, and other RF equipment used in lab and field test environments.
- Support evaluation of routine repairs, retrofits, system integrations, calibrations, test equipment operation, configuration, and adjustment of units under test.
- Participate in test readiness reviews, technical interchange meetings, Integrated Product Teams, daily test briefs, post-test debriefs, and lessons learned sessions.
- Develop and review RF analysis products, technical reports, test reports, engineering summaries, briefings, and recommendations for Government review.
- Ensure test data, technical documentation, and analysis products are properly marked, controlled, stored, and distributed in accordance with applicable security, CUI, OPSEC, and classification requirements.
Qualifications
Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Zero (0) to three (3) years of professional experience in RF, microwave, or electronic systems engineering.
- Experience supporting RF test and evaluation, spectrum analysis, signal analysis, wireless communications testing, EW systems, CUAS systems, or related technical test activities.
- Knowledge of RF fundamentals, including frequency, bandwidth, modulation, propagation, antennas, gain/loss, noise, interference, transmitters, receivers, link performance, and signal characteristics.
- Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain interim Secret clearance to start. Final Secret Clearance is required.
