Substitute Teacher - 2025-2026 School Year

Department: Academics
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Employee Type: Temporary/As Needed
Reports To: Associate Director of Academic Affairs

Job Summary:

Substitute Teachers at Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School support the school’s mission of promoting educational equity by helping prepare students to succeed in college and beyond. Substitutes play an important role in sustaining academically rigorous, faith-centered classrooms rooted in Catholic and Jesuit values.

In alignment with Cristo Rey Jesuit’s mission and Graduate at Graduation values—open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, committed to justice, and work-experienced—Substitute Teachers foster a safe, respectful, and structured learning environment where all students can thrive. Substitutes interact with students in a positive, caring, and professional manner and contribute to a school culture that forms men and women for others.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement lesson plans, instructional materials, and activities prepared by the classroom teacher.
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is orderly, respectful, and aligned with Cristo Rey Jesuit’s academic and behavioral expectations.
  • Set and reinforce high expectations for student engagement, effort, and behavior.
  • Support student learning by providing guidance, clarification, and encouragement as needed.
  • Take accurate attendance and follow all school procedures and policies.
  • Redirect student behavior appropriately and build positive rapport with students.
  • Communicate relevant academic or behavioral notes to the classroom teacher and/or school leadership.
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, or other assigned duties.
  • Uphold and model the Catholic and Jesuit identity of Cristo Rey Jesuit in word and action.
  • Participate professionally as a member of the school community.
Education and/or Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Prior experience working with children or adolescents (education, youth programs, tutoring, coaching, mentoring, etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with first-generation, low-income, or historically marginalized students is a plus.
  • Teaching certification is not required for substitute roles.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and onboarding requirements.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and school leaders.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and professionalism in a fast-paced school setting.
