How much do reverse engineering jobs pay per year?
What is reverse engineering?
A Reverse Engineering job involves analyzing, deconstructing, and understanding the design, functionality, or structure of hardware, software, or systems. Professionals in this field work to identify security vulnerabilities, improve existing products, recover lost documentation, or ensure compatibility with other technologies. This role is common in cybersecurity, product development, and forensic analysis, requiring strong technical skills in programming, debugging, and system architecture.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in reverse engineering?
To thrive in Reverse Engineering, you need strong analytical abilities, advanced knowledge of computer architecture and programming, and typically a degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with disassemblers (like IDA Pro), debuggers (such as OllyDbg or Ghidra), and certifications like OSCP or CREST can greatly enhance your effectiveness. Attention to detail, persistence, and strong problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities allow professionals to systematically deconstruct complex systems, ensuring accurate analysis and effective security assessments.
What are some common challenges faced in a reverse engineering role?
One of the main challenges in Reverse Engineering is dealing with sophisticated obfuscation and anti-tamper techniques that software developers use to protect their code. Professionals in this field often have to keep pace with rapidly evolving software technologies and continually update their knowledge base. Additionally, projects may require extensive collaboration with security teams, software developers, and legal advisors to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong technical expertise and a commitment to continuous learning.

Thank you for your interest in Northwest Ordinance Distilling, our first ever facility in the Hoosier state, and the newest facility in the Sazerac manufacturing network. Founded on the principles of servant leadership and continuous improvement our entire plant team works tirelessly to accomplish our vision: Build the most efficient, flexible, and engaged plant and team in the Sazerac Manufacturing Network.
This facility specializes in small format production (50mL-375mL bottles) leveraging 14 high speed production lines to produce over 13 million cases of various spirits annually. We are in search of talented individuals who have a strong desire to develop others and lead a team to success. Main focus for this role will be on shift production and driving capabilities through implementing sound manufacturing processes. At Northwest Ordinance Distilling we believe our people are our greatest asset. Your drive and determination combined with our passion for people will ensure we win as a team. This facility operates 24/7 and this role will work an alternative work schedule.
This is an onsite Monday-Friday 1st shift role.
The Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and daily operation of the machine shop supporting custom machinery, tooling, and change parts for complex manufacturing operations across Sazerac. You will be a hands-on supervisor, actively performing design engineering, CAM programming, and machining while providing leadership and technical oversight to design engineers and machinists. This supervisor oversees the full workflow from concept and design through fabrication, installation, and as-built documentation. In this role, you will use SolidWorks, SolidCAM, Geomagic, and 3D scanning technologies for design, reverse engineering, and manufacturing support. Manages workloads, project costs, schedules, and quality standards to ensure safe operations, production uptime, and consistent delivery of high-quality parts and equipment.
What You’ll Do:
- Perform and oversee 2D/3D CAD modeling, CNC setup, machining processes, and advanced troubleshooting to resolve technical issues. Ensure optimal machining strategies are implemented for efficiency and precision.
- Design and develop detailed components, fixtures, and tooling solutions by translating engineering requirements into practical, manufacturable outputs. Validate designs for functionality, durability, and performance.
- Review and approve technical outputs including drawings, models, and CAM programs to ensure accuracy, compliance, and manufacturability. Maintain high standards for documentation and process consistency.
- Develop detailed cost estimates, material requirements, and labor projections to support project planning and execution. Track and adjust estimates based on project scope and performance.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing shop performance metrics and identifying opportunities to enhance throughput, reduce waste, and improve overall operational effectiveness.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, Design, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
- 2 + years of combined experience in design engineering and CNC machining within a manufacturing or machine shop environment.
- Demonstrated experience as a hands-on machinist, design engineer, or technical lead, with prior supervisory or working-manager responsibility. Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar), CAM programming, CNC machining workflows, and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and tolerances.
- Experience with 3D scanning and reverse engineering tools (Geomagic preferred), along with the ability to develop cost estimates, material takeoffs, and labor projections. Strong organizational, communication, and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently and apply mechanical aptitude to complex systems.
Preferred:
- Experience with multi-axis CNC machining, complex tooling strategies, and supporting custom machinery, automation, or capital equipment projects. Ability to apply advanced machining techniques to solve complex manufacturing challenges.
- Familiarity with document control, revision management, and engineering change processes, preferably within regulated environments such as CPG or food & beverage. Understands the importance of compliance, traceability, and standardized procedures.
- Experience implementing shop standards, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives. Hands-on exposure to bottling or processing equipment, including maintenance, to drive operational improvements.
