What is the difference between Salaried Reverse Engineering vs Software Developer?

AspectSalaried Reverse EngineeringSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field, sometimes certifications in cybersecurity or reverse engineering toolsBachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
Work EnvironmentSecurity-focused labs, corporate R&D, or cybersecurity firmsOffice settings, tech companies, startups, or remote

While both roles require strong programming skills and technical knowledge, Salaried Reverse Engineers focus on analyzing and dissecting software to identify vulnerabilities or understand malicious code, often within cybersecurity contexts. Software Developers design, build, and maintain software applications. The roles differ mainly in their objectives: reverse engineering emphasizes analysis and security, whereas development emphasizes creation and implementation.

Job Title: Engineer

Location: Princeton, IN (On-Site)
Job Type: Full-Time
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Engineering Manager

About Us

We are a leading manufacturer of high-performance gears and gear systems, serving industries worldwide. Our team combines innovation, engineering expertise, and precision manufacturing to deliver solutions that power the worlds toughest applications.

We are seeking an Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on problem-solving, enjoys both design and project leadership, and wants to make an impact on projects from concept through completion.

What Youll Do

  • Lead reverse engineering projects: analyze, inspect, and model existing gears and gearboxes using CAD, 3D scanning, and inspection tools.
  • Manage engineering projects, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
  • Investigate failed or worn components, identify root causes, and develop repair or redesign solutions.
  • Prepare cost and time estimates for repairs, rebuilds, and new gear projects.
  • Support material sourcing, including selecting appropriate materials and working with suppliers.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation such as drawings, BOMs, and inspection reports.
  • Work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Provide technical support to sales, service, and customer teams.

What Were Looking For

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or related field
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks or similar); FEA experience a plus.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience, ideally in gears, rotating equipment, or industrial machinery.
  • Experience with reverse engineering methods (dimensional inspection, 3D scanning, material analysis).
  • Familiarity with CMM inspection techniques.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing documentation (BOMs, routings).
  • Familiarity with estimating and material procurement/sourcing.
  • Knowledge of gear design theory, metallurgy, and manufacturing processes (hobbing, shaping, grinding, heat treatment).
  • Strong project management skills (scheduling, budgeting, cross-functional coordination).
  • PMP certification or formal project management training is a plus.

Physical Demands

  • Office-based role with frequent shop floor visits.
  • May occasionally lift or move objects up to 2025 lbs (components, samples, tools).
  • Close vision required for detailed part inspections and CAD/drawing review.
  • Occasional travel to customer or supplier sites.

Why Join Us

  • Be part of a global leader in gear manufacturing.
  • Work on diverse, challenging projects that blend engineering design with project management.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented environment where your expertise makes an impact.
  • Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for professional growth.
