Position Purpose

The Lead Historyteller position is an entertainment role and must have a good sense of fun and a desire to entertain. Our guests judge our company and all of our Employees by the way you handle your duties. It is the Lead Historyteller’s job to bring the St. Augustine’s 1908 history to life in a respectful, accurate, and engaging way while keeping to the company’s mission to be The Nation’s Storyteller. As a Lead Historyteller, you will assist the Museum and Productions Manager in supervising the acting staff and encourage their fellow employees to create memorable, interactive, and engaging experiences for our guests. Lead Historytellers primarily perform alongside their employees while overseeing the daily operation of their attraction, maintaining exceptional show quality, supporting operational needs, and ensuring a safe, efficient, and memorable guest experiences. They are expected to think and act as stewards of their attractions, taking pride inits appearance and the memorable experiences being created for our Guests every day.

Requirements:

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Manager to achieve goals as assigned, including but is not limited to, train, re-train, and motivate staff, prepare weekly schedules, revise scripts, and review/evaluate historyteller’s performance.
  • Lead by example through energy, enthusiasm, and showmanship, inspire other employees and Historytellers to personalize their performances and continuously elevate the Guest experience.
  • Work closely with the Manager on Duty to monitor ridership and operational needs throughout the day.
  • Present historically accurate information in an entertaining manner in costume, both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, several times a work shift, in a loud, audible voice without amplification for an audience of up to 65 people.
  • Portray costumed historical characters, either based upon real persons or composites of real people to teach or interpret local history.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently or as a team within the scope of established rules and regulations.
  • Ability to motivate, develop, and direct people as they work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships, treat people with respect under all circumstances, instill trust in others besides upholding the values of the organization.
  • Ability to learn stage direction and memorize historical details provided in scripted story and relay and stage directions, as well as improvising, if the situation arises.
  • Ability to give the scripted story in the time allowed.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong interest in St. Augustine history is desirable.
  • Prior performance or interpretation experience strongly preferred.

  • Must pass pre-employment background check and substance abuse testing
  • Have a passion for helping people and making their St. Augustine experience a memorable one.
