What is a Retail Software Developer?

A Retail Software Developer is a technology professional who designs, develops, and maintains software applications specifically for the retail industry. These applications can include point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management tools, e-commerce platforms, and customer relationship management solutions. Retail Software Developers work to ensure that retail businesses can operate efficiently, provide better customer experiences, and adapt to changing market needs. Their work often involves collaborating with other IT professionals, understanding retail business requirements, and implementing security and scalability best practices.

How does a Retail Software Developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a retail organization?

Retail Software Developers frequently work alongside product managers, UX/UI designers, and data analysts to deliver solutions that enhance the retail customer experience. They participate in regular team meetings to gather requirements, provide technical input, and ensure alignment with business goals. Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential, as developers often integrate their work with point-of-sale systems, inventory management, and e-commerce platforms. This collaborative environment helps ensure that software solutions are robust, user-friendly, and meet the evolving needs of both customers and staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Retail Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or JavaScript), a solid understanding of retail business processes, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems, e-commerce platforms, and databases, as well as familiarity with version control tools like Git, is highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and adaptability are essential soft skills that help manage changing requirements and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure you can build reliable, user-friendly retail software solutions that directly support business goals and customer satisfaction.

Job description

Database Application Developer

Position Summary

OPEX Corporation is currently looking for a junior or mid-level software developer to join our Cortex database team. Cortex equipment management and order fulfillment software controls OPEX's robotic automation equipment and acts as the brains of a fulfillment operation. Database interaction plays a central role in this application suite. Proficiency in this area is a core requirement for this role. This position will be responsible for designing new schemas and PL/PGSQL functions to ensure data consistency while allowing for deeply customizable business logic to meet each customer's unique requirements. We subscribe to the philosophy of "smart database, thin clients" which places a significant portion of the application logic in the database. This is a coding position, not a DBA role. The candidate will require strong software development skills to pair with their database knowledge.  This position is based in Moorestown, NJ.

The Company

OPEX is a global leader in robotic warehouse automation system design, development, manufacturing, production, installation, and service. Our warehouse automation systems incorporate the latest mechanical, electrical, robotic and software technologies. We specialize in next generation goods-to-person (G2P), sortation, and warehouse control software & consulting.  OPEX's customers are among the largest e-commerce, consumer retail, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and package delivery companies in the world. We offer a vibrant, collaborative, and entrepreneurial work environment with team members who care about producing quality products.

Responsibilities

This role requires a team-oriented software developer who is a hands-on coder, but also able to provide a fresh perspective and new ideas to a growing team. This person will be expected to:

  • Develop well-crafted and thoroughly tested software. Our customers have unique demands which require creative testing solutions.
  • Initiate and participate in code-reviews as reviewer and reviewee.
  • Analyze, plan, and break down projects into smaller tasks.
  • Hold themselves and the entire team accountable to the highest standards.  Code is merged with no warnings and all tests passing.
  • Ensure team is using contemporary software development methods and tools.
  • Empower individuals and the team to be successful.
  • Embrace culture of continuous learning and improvement. Take what you learn and challenge status quo.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies as a member of the database scrum team.
  • Improve quality and efficiency, in part by expanding use of automated testing.
  • Deliver large, complex projects with quality.
  • Coordinate multiple high priority tasks.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, related field, or relevant experience.
  • Technical/Engineering experience in a software development organization 0-10 yrs.
  • Experience developing new products is strongly preferred.
  • Experience developing, coding, and interfacing with relational databases.
  • PostgreSQL and PL/PGSQL preferred. Familiarity with other database environments is welcome as well.
  • Domain knowledge in Material Handling, Warehouse Automation or Industrial segment is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional listening, verbal, presentation, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel when necessary (typically less than 20%).

Salary range of $70,000 - $120,000 based on experience.
