What are some typical challenges a retail operations project manager may encounter when implementing new processes across multiple store locations?

A Retail Operations Project Manager often faces challenges such as coordinating communication across diverse store teams, ensuring consistent adoption of new processes, and managing tight deadlines while minimizing disruption to daily operations. Balancing the unique needs of each location with standardized company goals can also be complex. Effective project managers proactively address these issues through clear planning, regular training sessions, and by fostering strong relationships between corporate, regional, and store-level staff.

This role requires a strong foundation in Agile project management, technical acumen, and the ability to adapt across diverse project types. You will partner closely with cross-functional teams, technical leads, and business stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Planning

  • Drive end-to-end project execution, from initiation through delivery, ensuring scope, quality, and deadlines are met.
  • Oversee project risks, dependencies, and change management to ensure successful outcomes.

Agile & Team Facilitation

  • Facilitate Agile ceremonies (Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives).
  • Support backlog grooming, sprint goal clarity, and velocity tracking in collaboration with Product Managers and Delivery Leads.
  • Identify and remove blockers to maintain team momentum.
  • Foster a high-performing, self-organizing team culture.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Coordinate technical discussions and decisions with engineering leads and architects.
  • Align delivery with both technical and business objectives.
  • Facilitate effective communication between cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Support dependencies across teams and, where needed, contribute to Scrum of Scrums activities.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Track progress using tools like Azure DevOps and Jira; ensure accurate documentation of sprint artifacts, burndown charts, and dashboards.
  • Provide clear and consistent updates to leadership, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Leverage automation to streamline reporting and workflows where possible.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead retrospectives to generate actionable improvements.
  • Promote Agile maturity through coaching and tailored growth plans for teams.
  • Continuously assess and refine processes for efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of project management experience in IT, with a track record of delivering technical solutions.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid approaches); Scrum Master certification is a plus.
  • Experience managing projects in cloud-native or engineering environments; exposure to Generative AI, LLMs, or Agentic AI is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with project management tools (Azure DevOps, Jira, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Strong stakeholder management, risk management, and change management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt quickly to evolving requirements.
