What is resort accounting?

Resort accounting refers to the specialized financial management and record-keeping practices used in the hospitality industry, specifically for resorts. It involves tracking revenue and expenses from various departments such as accommodations, food and beverage, recreation, and events. Resort accountants are responsible for budgeting, payroll, tax compliance, and generating financial reports that help management make informed business decisions. Their role ensures the financial health and regulatory compliance of the resort.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in resort accounting, and why are they important?

To thrive in Resort Accounting, a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and hospitality industry standards is essential, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with property management systems (PMS), accounting software like QuickBooks or Sage, and knowledge of relevant regulations are typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in this role. These abilities ensure accurate financial management, compliance, and support the smooth financial operations of a resort environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in resort accounting, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in resort accounting often face challenges such as managing fluctuating occupancy rates, reconciling multiple revenue streams (lodging, food and beverage, activities), and ensuring compliance with both hospitality and financial regulations. Effective management involves maintaining strong communication with operational teams, leveraging specialized accounting software tailored for hospitality, and staying up to date with industry standards. Developing flexible processes for month-end closing and periodic forecasting can also help address the dynamic nature of resort operations.

Job description

Overview

About Boyne Resorts

Boyne Resorts is a privately held, family-owned ski company with a 75-year legacy of creating transformative outdoor lifestyle experiences across North America. As a “company of resorts” rather than a “resort company,” we honor the unique identity of each property while sharing a commitment to excellence — and to serving our people, our guests, and our communities first.

Our shared culture is built on the L.E.A.D.S. values: Long-Term Thinking, Excellence in Execution, Attitude is Everything, Develop Great People, and Serve First.

About BOYNE Golf and Boyne Resorts Golf Operations

BOYNE Golf is the golf brand marketing for Boyne Resorts' Michigan properties. Representing eleven courses across three resort destinations — Boyne Mountain, Bay Harbor, and The Highlands — BOYNE Golf markets to a regional, national, and international audience of avid golfers. The portfolio includes Bay Harbor Golf Club, The Heather, Arthur Hills, The Alpine, Donald Ross Memorial, among others. BOYNE Golf is recognized as one of the premier golf destinations in the Midwest and competes in a national marketplace.

Position Summary

The Business Planning and Control Manager is a leadership role responsible for driving operational excellence, consistency, and performance across golf operations. This role owns the control of following developed operational best practices across all courses, leads analytical review of key performance metrics, supports budget development and financial oversight, and guides long-range capital maintenance planning for golf course assets. The role works in close partnership with the Senior Vice President of Golf Operations and Director of Marketing, property-level golf leadership, and course maintenance teams to ensure consistent, high-quality golf operations across the portfolio.

This is a full-time, year-round position reporting to the Senior Vice President of Golf Operations. The role includes weekend responsibilities during the summer golf season and may require travel between properties and to attend industry events or off-site meetings.
