How does a residential interior designer typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Residential interior designers work closely with clients to understand their needs, preferences, and budget, often through a series of consultations and presentations. They also coordinate with contractors, architects, and suppliers to ensure that design concepts are executed accurately and within the agreed timeline. To thrive as a Residential Interior Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, spatial planning, and color theory, generally supported by a degree in interior design or a related field. Creativity, excellent communication, and project management skills help designers stand out by understanding client needs and managing timelines. These abilities are crucial for delivering functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet client expectations and adhere to budgets.

What is residential interior design?

Residential interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interiors of homes to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing and functional environment for the people who live there. Interior designers work with clients to create personalized spaces that reflect their tastes, needs, and lifestyles, while also addressing factors like space planning, color schemes, furniture selection, lighting, and decor. They may also coordinate with architects, contractors, and other professionals to ensure the project meets safety and design standards. Residential interior design can range from simple room makeovers to full-scale renovations of houses or apartments.

Residential Interior Design Consultant

The Hamlin Group, LLC

Atlanta, GA

$100 - $500/hr

Contractor

Job description

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Residential Interior Design Consultant to join our network of professionals. In this role, you will serve as an extension of The Hamlin Group — acting as a trusted liaison between our team and clients throughout the interior design and selections process.

This will be a 1099, independent contractor position

While the role is flexible and largely remote, it does require the ability to meet with clients and our team in person within the Atlanta metro area. You will represent The Hamlin Group brand directly, so professionalism, reliability, and a client-first mindset are essential.

Compensation:

$100 - $500 hourly

Responsibilities:

What You Will Do

As our Residential Interior Design Consultant, you will guide homeowners through the interior design and space planning process from early project estimates through final finish selections. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the primary design liaison between The Hamlin Group and the homeowner, building trust and maintaining clear, professional communication throughout the project
  • Guide clients through all required interior finish selections, including but not limited to: flooring, tile, cabinetry, countertops, plumbing fixtures, electrical fixtures, paint colors, bath accessories, window treatments, door and cabinet hardware, and related finish items
  • Assist clients in understanding project budgets and allowances, helping them make informed selections that align with the overall project scope and budget
  • Provide current, market-informed product recommendations with up-to-date knowledge of vendors, pricing, lead times, and availability
  • Conduct showroom visits and vendor meetings with clients as needed
  • Coordinate and communicate selection decisions back to The Hamlin Group team in a clear, organized, and timely manner
  • Support early-stage space planning conversations as needed, particularly as they relate to how design decisions impact layout, flow, and finish integration
  • Represent The Hamlin Group brand with professionalism and integrity in every client interaction

Qualifications:

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • Based in the Atlanta metropolitan area, with the ability to meet with clients and the Hamlin Group team locally when needed
  • Demonstrated experience in residential interior design, with a strong focus on finish selections, client consultation, and product specification
  • Current working knowledge of the Atlanta design market — vendors, showrooms, product lines, pricing, and lead times
  • Deep familiarity with the full spectrum of residential finish categories: flooring, tile, cabinetry, countertops, plumbing and electrical fixtures, paint, hardware, window treatments, and bath accessories
  • A clear understanding of project budgets and allowances, and the ability to guide clients toward selections that are both beautiful and financially appropriate
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills — you are warm, professional, and skilled at building rapport with homeowners
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and clients simultaneously
  • Comfortable operating independently as a contracted professional while representing another firm’s brand and standards

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Formal education or certification in interior design (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or NCIDQ certification)
  • Prior experience working with or within a design-build or residential construction firm
  • Background in architectural design or space planning — a strong plus for candidates with both design and technical capability
  • Established relationships with Atlanta-area showrooms, vendors, and trade accounts

IMPORTANT Note on Role Scope:

  • This is primarily an interior design and selections role, not an architectural position — though candidates with an architectural background who also bring strong interior design and client consultation skills are absolutely encouraged to apply. The Hamlin Group is a licensed architect-owned firm, so the technical and structural aspects of each project are handled by our team. What we need from this role is a talented design professional who can focus entirely on the client experience and the selection process.

Compensation

  • Compensation is negotiable and commensurate with experience. The compensation structure — including scope, scheduling, and rate — will be determined collaboratively with the right candidate based on fit, availability, and project needs.
  • Most likely, there will be established rates or compensation packages set forth for various packages of work, i.e., kitchen design, basement design, bathroom, whole house, etc.
  • Could also be hourly based
