What is a residential desk assistant?

Residential Desk Assistants (RDAs) are student employees who work at the front desks of residence halls or campus housing. Their primary responsibilities include assisting residents and visitors, managing mail and packages, answering questions, monitoring building security, and enforcing housing policies. RDAs help create a safe and welcoming environment in the residence halls by providing excellent customer service and serving as a resource for students. They often work evening and weekend shifts and collaborate closely with residence life staff. This role is ideal for students who are organized, personable, and interested in helping others.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a residential desk assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Residential Desk Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with campus policies, typically supported by a high school diploma or some college coursework. Experience with reservation systems, key management software, and basic office tools like Microsoft Office is often required.
