Job description

Summary of Responsibilities: The Residence Director is a full-time live-in position, active member of the Student Development department, and someone that oversees the execution of a Christian learning community within the residence hall setting. The Residence Director supervises and mentors the building of team leaders, providing programming for the hall and campus, developing relationships with residents, and overseeing the functioning of the residence hall. In addition to this, the Residence Director also assists in coordinating housing responsibilities and serves as a judicial specialist.


Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)

  1. Administrative:
    1. Provide management, oversight and assistance with conduct hearings, meetings, mediations. Assist Director of Residence Life in suspension-level conduct response.
    2. Assists in the creation and development of RA training and Residence Life programming.
      1. Update, collect and assess all Residence Life program assessments including but not limited to conduct evaluations, RA training assessments, etc.
      2. Stand in for the Director of Residence Life at meetings where the Director is unable to attend.
    3. Communicates facility damages and charges to necessary departments and residents.
    4. Completes and organizes paperwork necessary for the RA hiring process.
  2. Developmental:
    1. Appropriately connects students to campus resources and services.
    2. Knows students living in their residence hall.
      1. Advises and gives guidance to students about personal, spiritual, academic or social issues.
      2. Consults on disciplinary problems in the residence hall, as well as holds discussions with students referred by RA’s concerning inappropriate behavior.
      3. Responds to maintenance and other issues that arise in residence hall living areas.
    3. Coordinates and assists RA’s with residence hall social, educational, spiritual, and cultural programming.
      1. Helps the RA staff and students with the development of community in the residence hall.
      2. Assists RA staff with individual coaching and roommate conflict mediation.
    4. Coordinates with area RD-Graduate Assistants (GA’s) to plan and implement programs and events based on students’ class and needs.
    5. Promotes good communication and relationships with students, Student Development personnel, maintenance staff, administration, faculty and community.
  3. Oversight and Supervision:
    1. Maintains regular contact with the RA’s to check on their progress.
    2. Works closely with RA’s and Building Team Leaders in planning activities and maintaining the residence.
    3. Manages the overall operation of the residence facility, ensuring it is comfortable, safe and sanitary.
    4. Maintains and supports the security of the residence hall and its occupants.
    5. Administers room sign-up in an individual residence hall and assists with the all-campus process.
    6. Opens and closes residence hall before and after each college break. Plans and implements duty schedules for RA’s.
    7. Plans to be on campus during any period in which there are no classes, but during which the residence halls are open.
    8. Oversees class based and other area programming for assigned residential area.
    9. Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.
  4. Crisis Management:
    1. Participates in an on-call duty rotation.
    2. Responds and assists with crisis management, intervention, and emergency response.
    3. Provides support and follow-up for students and staff involved in emergency situations.
  5. Student Conduct:
    1. Maintains standards established by the College as set forth in the Student Handbook.
    2. Hears and adjudicates in hall disciplinary cases for the Student Development Office.
    3. Completes all the necessary paperwork and communication throughout the Student Conduct process.
  6. Housing and Facilities Management:
    1. Assists the Housing Coordinator with housing for new, returning and summer residents.
    2. Develop, implement and / or supervise programs and services in support of assigned housing program.
    3. Develop and maintain policies and procedures on housing, which may include eligibility, lease agreements, petitions, retention, emergency, or temporary housing, special interest housing, and riders or leases.
    4. Gather information on college breaks and beginning of the school year when students are returning early to ensure their ID cards are programmed for their return.
    5. Inspects vacant rooms; assesses charges to students after check-out inspection.
    6. Maintain content and design of publications regarding all housing information.
    7. Responsible for opening and closing residential facility complex for the academic year and other service periods, including issuing and controlling keys / ID cards and managing the changes of room lock codes.
  7. Training and Selection:
    1. Assumes responsibility for organizing the Resident Assistants (RA’s) in the residence hall
      1. Orienting them to their responsibilities
      2. Conducting training sessions and weekly staff meetings
    2. Evaluates the individual RA as well as the overall Residence Life Program
    3. Creates, communicates, and carries out vision for the residence hall community.
    4. Participates in campus Residence Life staff orientation. Implements training sessions as requested.
    5. Takes leadership in the selection, training, and evaluation of the Residence Life Staff.
  8. General Responsibilities:
    1. Attends weekly meetings within Student Development and Residence Life.
    2. Abides by all College policies and regulations.
    3. Enforces all College policies, rules and regulations governing residence halls and houses
    4. Serves as a liaison with the Health Services, Counseling Center, Student Success, Physical Plant, Food Service, Security, and Business Office.
    5. Completes all administrative responsibilities and tasks assigned by the Director of Residence Life.
    6. Responsible for staying Saturday after commencement and making sure every student is checked out.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum:
    1. Education: Bachelor’s Degree in higher education, counseling or related field.
    2. Experience: 1-2 years of experience in higher education, counseling or related field. Knowledge and experience with college students and/or higher education environment.
    3. Skill/Abilities:
      1. Work with a diverse group of College constituents.

      3. Work independently and meet deadlines.
      4. Express and role model one’s Christian faith in an open enrollment environment.
      5. Counsel/advise the college age population.

    4. Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. An eligible candidate must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
