Job Title: Data Engineer (Contract)
Location: Remote
Duration: 6-Month Contract

  • Multi-disciplinary group of experts specializing in building and managing the end-to-end data solutions that drive our core research and reporting functions. We translate complex project needs into robust, automated systems, architecting resilient data pipelines and developing sophisticated applications that make data accessible and actionable for our stakeholders.
  • Our work is guided by a strategic vision focused on continuous innovation, including migrating legacy systems to a more maintainable and scalable Python-based architecture.

Position Overview:
  • We are seeking a motivated and experienced Data Engineer to join our team on a contract basis.
  • In this role, you will be instrumental in developing, maintaining, and automating the data pipelines and backend systems that are the engine for our research.
  • You will take on existing, critical systems (including a key SMS notification system) while also contributing to new development and our team's strategic migration to a modern Python and AWS-based architecture.
  • The ideal candidate is a problem-solver who is passionate about data integrity, automation, and building efficient, scalable systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable ETL and data integration pipelines using Python.
  • Develop and manage backend services and APIs to support internal applications and data delivery.
  • Automate data processing, cleaning, validation, and reporting workflows to ensure data integrity and reduce manual effort.
  • Manage and enhance cloud-based infrastructure and services on AWS, ensuring reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers and analysts to support the migration of legacy systems to modern, Python-based solutions.
  • Provide support and enhancements for existing applications, including a critical SMS notification system.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation for all developed processes and systems.

Required Skills & Experience (Must-Haves):
  • 4-5+ years of professional experience in a data engineering or backend development role specifically with JavaScript, Vue, Python, MS SQL & AWS
  • Strong proficiency in Python and its data ecosystem (especially Pandas).
  • Proven experience writing complex SQL queries and working with relational databases (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
  • Hands-on experience building and managing solutions using core AWS services (e.g., Lambda, S3, SQS, API Gateway).
  • Full-stack capabilities, including experience with a modern JavaScript framework (e.g., Vue, React, Angular).
  • Demonstrable experience in designing and building ETL/ELT data pipelines.
  • Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs.
  • A portfolio (e.g., GitHub, personal website) showcasing your work and capabilities is required.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Haves):
  • Previous experience working in a consulting firm or on government/research-oriented projects.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, AWS CDK).
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
