Job description

Job Responsibilities Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Laboratory Chemist sets up and supports the department's teaching and research laboratories; procures and organizes chemicals, supplies and equipment; trains and supervises student lab assistants; and performs duties outlined in the department Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Plan. Sets up well-organized chemistry teaching laboratories in a timely manner. Assesses, retrieves and stores chemicals, supplies and equipment in compliance with federal and state regulations.

Works with faculty, vendors and the university Purchasing department to procure chemicals and laboratory equipment to effectively meet the needs of department programs. Hires, trains and supervises student lab assistants. Maintains an up-to-date online inventory of chemicals and carries out duties outlined in the department Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Plan.

Manages and implements the department's hazardous waste program. Collaborates with faculty to provide effective laboratory support for teaching and research labs. Minimum and Additional Requirements Bachelor's degree in chemistry or closely related discipline.

Ability to demonstrate mastery of fundamental concepts of general and organic chemistry. Exceptional planning and organizational skills and the ability to consistently provide well-organized laboratory equipment and chemicals required for effective teaching. Ability to develop expertise in chemical hygiene and waste management.

Demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities quickly and according to best practices. Strong personal commitment to mentoring students, working effectively in a team-oriented environment, and sparking enthusiasm for chemistry. Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and vendors.
