Job description
Chief, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
Associate Professor or Professor, Department of Pediatrics
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry
Golisano Children's Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center
Rochester, NY
The Opportunity
Golisano Children's Hospital (GCH) at the University of Rochester Medical Center invites applications and nominations for the position of Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a visionary, academically accomplished physician-leader to lead a nationally recognized, high-performing division at the only pediatric referral center serving the 17-county Finger Lakes region of New York.
The incoming Chief will inherit a division with deep clinical expertise, a vibrant fellowship training program, and a strong research culture, and will be positioned to expand and elevate all three missions within a well-resourced academic environment.
About Golisano Children's Hospital
Golisano Children's Hospital is the dedicated children's hospital within the University of Rochester Medical Center, operating under the license of Strong Memorial Hospital, the adult hospital at URMC and the designated Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and burn center for the region. This close integration provides GCH with the full resources of a major academic medical center while maintaining a child- and family-centered environment. GCH is consistently ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals by U.S. News & World Report across nine specialty areas, including neonatology, neurology, neurosurgery, hematology/oncology, nephrology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics. The current eight-story, 148-bed hospital opened in 2015 and provides a full spectrum of care spanning more than 40 specialty areas, serving over 85,000 children and their families each year. Plans are underway for an expansion that will add two more floors to the children's tower.
The Department of Pediatrics ranks consistently among the top 20 pediatric departments nationally in NIH-funded research, with robust basic, translational, and clinical programs and a long tradition of excellence in medical education and community advocacy.
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care holds a central role in the clinical, educational, and research missions of GCH. For approximately 1,000 ICU admissions per year, the Division faculty provide full-time, in-house coverage of the following:
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
The PICU is a 12-bed unit caring for pediatric patients across the region with critical injury and illness with an average daily census of 10.3. A multi-disciplinary team operates the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program serving PICU and NICU patients
Pediatric Cardiac Care Center (PCCC)
The 16-bed PCCC cares for patients undergoing cardiac surgery and interventional procedures. With an active ECMO program, the PCCC supports GCH's regional pediatric cardiac surgery program covering Western and Central New York.
Additional Clinical Services
Division faculty also staff a busy sedation and vascular access service and lead and manage the Pediatric Transport Program, serving critically ill children throughout the region.
Education & Training
The division is a recognized leader in pediatric critical care education. Training programs include:
- A three-year ACGME-approved Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, offering rotations in cardiothoracic surgery, anesthesiology, sedation, and PICC line services
- A comprehensive one-year Pediatric Neurocritical Care Fellowship, the only program of its kind in New York State, providing training in traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders and status epilepticus, stroke, hypoxic injuries, and more
- Robust teaching responsibilities for pediatric residents and medical students through required and elective rotations
Research
Research within the division centers on clinical questions in pediatric critical illness, with major foci including hemodynamic monitoring, acute kidney injury, clinical decision support, and outcomes research. The Department of Pediatrics' standing as a top-20 NIH-funded department creates an exceptional environment for growing the division's research enterprise. The incoming Chief will have the opportunity to shape and expand the division's research program with strong departmental and institutional support.
Position Responsibilities
The Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of the division, including:
- Clinical oversight of the PICU, PCCC, sedation service, and pediatric transport program
- Recruitment, mentorship, and development of faculty at all career stages
- Leadership of ACGME-accredited fellowship training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Neurocritical Care
- Advancement of the division's research agenda and scholarship
- Collaborative engagement with pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and other surgical and medical subspecialties
- Strategic program development, including expansion of clinical services and fellowship opportunities
- Stewardship of the division's financial and operational performance
- Representation of the division within GCH, the Department of Pediatrics, and at the regional and national level
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, nationally recognized leader in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine with:
- MD or DO degree with Board Certification in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
- Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of New York
- Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor (or equivalent qualifications)
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical care, academic scholarship, and program leadership
- Proven track record of recruiting, mentoring, and developing faculty
- Strong record of collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, hospital administration, and community stakeholders
- Experience in or appetite for growing a research program within an academic medical center
- Financial acumen and understanding of the operational demands of a complex, multi-service critical care division
