The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs. The University of Maryland is a Land-Grant Institution, a Sea Grant Institution, a Carnegie Research Extensive University, and a flagship of the state University System of Maryland. The University has a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and extension.
Degree programs in the College are offered in Agricultural and Resources Economics, Animal and Avian Sciences, Environmental Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Policy, Nutrition and Food Science, and Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, as well as a two-year certificate program in the Institute of Applied Agriculture. The college also offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Veterinary Medicine. Currently, the college enrollment includes 1100 undergraduates, approximately 300 graduate students seeking M.S. or Ph.D. degrees, and 120 students in the Institute of Applied Agriculture.
The College has 292 faculty FTEs and 305 staff, on- and off-campus. University of Maryland Extension has 24 county/city offices located throughout the state and is jointly administered with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, our 1890 Land-Grant partner. The Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station has 8 statewide research facilities. Additional information about the College is available at its website: www.agnr.umd.edu. Through its associate deans, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources fosters a close collaborative working relationship between instruction, research, and extension activities.
Position Description
The Associate Dean is responsible to the Dean of the College for meeting the mission and goals of the college's undergraduate instructional programs. In addition, the Associate Dean undertakes faculty affairs responsibilities, which involve coordinating policies and procedures related to college and departmental tenure and promotion, mentoring faculty, and resolving faculty issues. The Associate Dean interacts extensively with the Associate Provost and the Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and develops connections and collaborations with other colleges on campus, as well as two- and four-year colleges throughout the state of Maryland.
Responsibilities:
The Associate Dean oversees all undergraduate and certificate programs in the college's six departments and the institute associated with it. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Provide leadership for the coordination and facilitation of recruitment, retention, and success of undergraduate students.
Provide visionary leadership by establishing priorities for the undergraduate educational program development in collaboration with college departments and programs.
Ensure the quality and integrity of learning outcomes assessments across degree programs.
Spearhead curricular review and revitalization efforts and support teaching and learning activities.
Actively participate and represent college interests on university curriculum and education committees for undergraduate programs.
Provide oversight of academic programs' annual budget and allocation of teaching assistantships to AGNR departments in support of university general education programs.
Provide program coordination for undergraduate research, study abroad, and internship activities.
Provide leadership in the planning and implementation of college-wide academic activities.
Assist the college efforts to increase scholarship aid through gifts
Work with departments and the college to improve and innovate capacity, such as distance education.
Represent the college statewide on all issues related to undergraduate education.
Coordinate faculty affairs policy/procedures relating to college and departmental APT and AEP guidelines, mentoring process for both tenure-track and professional-track faculty, post-tenure review, and other items related to the area of faculty affairs.
Provide input and leadership to the college's efforts to facilitate improved alumni and public relations efforts.
Provide leadership to advance connections with alumni through collaborative initiatives with the Office of External Relations that promote engagement, philanthropy, mentorship, and lifelong involvement with the college.
Advance strategic partnerships with industry and UMD Career Services to create innovative opportunities that prepare students for successful careers through internships, mentorship, experiential learning, and employer engagement.
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned doctorate in a discipline related to one of the academic departments in the college.
The credentials to be appointed to the rank of professor with tenure in one of the College's academic departments.
Demonstrated leadership abilities and proven management skills to work effectively with students, staff and faculty, along with skills to direct office staff that supports academic programs.
Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.
Excellence in instruction and advising.
Experience and professional interest in administering, planning, and implementing academic programs.
An understanding of the role of education in the context of a land-grant institution.
Outstanding communication and advocacy skills.
Ability to manage budget priorities and balance diverse office needs.
