Research & Development (R&D) Manager | Dietary Supplements | Manassas, VA

About the job

Pronto is seeking an experienced and innovative Research & Development (R&D) Manager to lead formulation development and lifecycle management for our growing dietary supplement portfolio in Manassas, VA.

In this role, you will oversee the development of new powder and capsule formulations, optimize existing products for manufacturability and cost efficiency, and support the successful scale‑up of products from laboratory development to commercial production. You will work cross‑functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations teams to ensure products meet the highest standards of quality, compliance, and performance.

What You'll Do

Lead the formulation, development, and optimization of dietary supplement products, including powders and capsules.

Manage and optimize a growing portfolio of dietary supplement products across multiple categories.

Drive the "Bench-to-Bottle" process, from concept and prototype development through commercial manufacturing.

Develop and optimize formulations to improve taste, flowability, stability, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.

Lead scale‑up activities and oversee the transition from laboratory batches to full‑scale production.

Troubleshoot product and manufacturing challenges related to powder density, flowability, blending, encapsulation, color, and other product characteristics.

Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to support product launches, resolve production issues, and qualify raw material suppliers.

Manage technical documentation, including Master Manufacturing Records (MMRs), specifications, and formulation records.

Ensure compliance with FDA 21 CFR Part 111, cGMP requirements, SQF standards, and internal quality systems.

Lead R&D projects and provide guidance to on-site and remote R&D team members.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field.

Minimum of 3–5 years of direct R&D experience in the dietary supplement, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, or food industry.

At least 2 years of leadership, project management, or team management experience.

Proven experience formulating powder blends and two‑piece capsule products.

Strong understanding of excipient functionality, including glidants, lubricants, fillers, and flow agents.

Experience scaling products from laboratory development to commercial manufacturing.

Working knowledge of FDA 21 CFR Part 111, cGMP regulations, and quality management systems.

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.

Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Ability to work on-site in Manassas, VA.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or Ph.D. in Food Science, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field.

Experience with SQF standards and food safety programs.

Experience working in a contract manufacturing environment.

Knowledge of ingredient sourcing, supplier qualification, and raw material specifications.

Experience leading cross-functional teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
