What is a research and development intern?

Research and Development (R&D) Interns are students or recent graduates who support a company's innovation and product development processes. R&D Interns gain practical experience by contributing to real-world projects, learning new techniques, and helping bring new products or improvements to market. Their work often involves collaboration with multiple teams and exposure to the research lifecycle within their industry.

Job description

The Volunteer Development Associate/Intern supports the fundraising and development functions of Limitless Disability Services, a licensed nonprofit adult day program serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Cherokee County, Georgia. This role is well suited for individuals with a background or interest in nonprofit development, grant writing, donor relations, or fundraising strategy who want to apply their skills in a mission-driven environment.

This is a flexible, largely remote role that offers meaningful hands-on experience with the full development cycle — from donor research and campaign support to event coordination and data management.

What You'll Do

As a Volunteer Development Associate, you will:

  • Research and identify prospective donors, grant opportunities, and funding sources aligned with the Limitless mission
  • Support the development and implementation of fundraising campaigns and donor outreach initiatives
  • Assist with donor stewardship activities, including acknowledgment letters, thank-you correspondence, and donor recognition efforts
  • Help maintain and update the donor database to ensure accurate, current records
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of fundraising events, including logistics, promotion, and volunteer coordination
  • Research fundraising best practices, emerging trends, and sector-specific strategies to inform organizational planning
  • Assist in analyzing campaign performance data and preparing summary reports
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership on creative fundraising concepts and proposals
  • Provide general administrative support to the development function as needed

What to Expect

You will work closely with Limitless leadership and have the opportunity to see how a growing nonprofit manages development across multiple funding streams — including Medicaid waivers, individual donors, corporate sponsorships, and grant funding. This is a high-impact role: Limitless is actively expanding its programs and physical campus, and the development work you contribute to will directly support that growth.

Benefits

  • Eligibility for the President's Volunteer Service Award, a nationally recognized honor for volunteer contributions
  • Documentation provided for community service hours or academic credit
  • Remote work available for most responsibilities
  • Direct mentorship and professional development in nonprofit operations and fundraising

Skills and Qualities We're Looking For

  • Genuine commitment to disability inclusion and the mission of Limitless
  • Experience with grant writing, donor communications, or fundraising — or a strong willingness to develop these skills independently
  • Strong written communication and research skills
  • Attention to detail, particularly in data entry and record-keeping
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision
