What are REO properties?

REO properties, or Real Estate Owned properties, are homes or real estate owned by a lender—usually a bank—after an unsuccessful sale at a foreclosure auction. These properties typically revert to the lender when the borrower defaults on their mortgage and no one buys the property at auction. REO properties are often sold 'as is', and can sometimes be purchased at a lower price than comparable homes on the market. Investors and homebuyers may find opportunities in REO properties, but they should be aware of possible repairs and the need for due diligence during the purchase process.
