Remote Working Engineering information

What is remote working engineering?

Remote working engineering refers to the practice of engineers performing their job duties from locations outside of a traditional office, often from home or other remote environments. This arrangement leverages digital tools and collaboration platforms to design, develop, test, and maintain engineering projects. Remote engineers may work in fields such as software, mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering, and need strong communication and self-management skills. The flexibility of remote work can improve work-life balance, but also requires discipline and effective time management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote working engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Working Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or certification in your engineering discipline. Familiarity with collaborative platforms like Git, project management tools (e.g., Jira, Trello), and cloud-based systems is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and productivity. These skills and qualities enable engineers to deliver quality work independently while staying connected and effective within distributed teams.

How do remote working engineers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote working engineers often collaborate with colleagues in various time zones by leveraging asynchronous communication tools like Slack, Jira, and email, as well as scheduling regular video meetings at overlapping hours. They rely on clear documentation, shared code repositories, and project management platforms to keep everyone aligned. This structure encourages proactive communication and flexibility, allowing engineers to manage their own schedules while ensuring project continuity and teamwork.

About
For over 25 years, NEOGOV has been at the forefront of public-sector innovation, building technology that helps government and education organizations work smarter, move faster, and better serve their communities.
We are a team of cutting-edge technologists, operators, and problem-solvers with top-tier skills and a shared ambition: to build the most efficient operating model in GovTech. We combine deep public-sector expertise with modern SaaS practices, AI-enabled workflows, and a relentless focus on execution.
At our core, we are a people-first company. We empower our customers to support the public servants they employ, the communities they serve, and the talented teams that bring our platform to life.
Our solutions support the entire employee journey, from hire to retire. By transforming complex HR and compliance workflows into simple, intuitive experiences, we help public-sector organizations reduce friction, improve efficiency, and focus on what matters most: making a difference.
This posting is for an existing vacancy.
The Role
  • Lead a small team to build NeoGov's AI platform - the shared AI services, infrastructure, and tooling used across our public-sector SaaS products.
  • Own the roadmap and delivery of GenAI, AI agents, RAG, and intelligent automation into products used by governments and public agencies.
  • Partner with Product, Data, Infrastructure, and Security to ship securely, compliantly, and at scale.

What You Will do
  • Lead the team - hire, coach, and grow a small team of AI/ML and platform engineers.
  • Own delivery - turn the AI strategy into a prioritized roadmap and ship it.
  • Build the platform - GenAI services, agents and orchestration, multi-agent (A2A), MCP integrations, RAG, semantic search, tool calling, and workflow automation, packaged as reusable services.
  • Set standards - define patterns, golden paths, and shared frameworks other teams build on.
  • Modernize - microservices, event-driven, API-first, IaC, and CI/CD across .NET, Python, and cloud-native.
  • Own governance & safety - evals, guardrails, tracing, hallucination and PII protection, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Stay hands-on - design reviews, prototyping, and unblocking the team.

Who You Are
Must-Haves
  • 6-8 years engineering, with 1-2 years leading as a manager or tech lead - open to a strong senior/staff engineer stepping into their first management role.
  • Shipped shared/platform services other engineers build on.
  • Hands-on with GenAI/LLMs, RAG, vector databases, and semantic search; familiar with agents, A2A, MCP, and tool calling (or eager to go deep fast).
  • Strong .NET and Python - APIs, backend, and AI services.
  • Solid distributed systems, microservices, event-driven, and API-first foundations
  • IaC (Terraform or AWS CDK), containers, CI/CD, and cloud-native SaaS.
  • Working knowledge of AI governance and safety practices.
  • Strong communication and leadership across engineering, product, data, and security.
Nice to Have
  • Built AI platforms, internal AI tooling, or an AI Center of Excellence.
  • Experience with agents, A2A, MCP servers, tool registries, agent memory, and observability.
  • .NET modernization and Python AI services experience.
  • Delivery in regulated or public-sector environments.
  • Familiar with eval/monitoring tools (Langfuse, LangSmith, MLflow, Phoenix) and data platforms (OpenSearch,
  • Snowflake, Databricks).

What NEOGOV Offers
  • Comprehensive Benefits package (medical, dental, vision, etc.) for full-time employees
  • Generous PTO to support work-life balance
  • Remote working opportunities
  • 401K Matching
  • Autonomy to grow and find your career path with supportive leadership
  • 12-week Paid Parental Leave
  • Inclusive and diverse environment

NEOGOV does not discriminate in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, membership in an employee organization, retaliation, parental status, protected military status, or other non-merit factors.
