Job Description:
Orbital is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer in a REMOTE WORK role to provide technical leadership and project execution support for heavy industrial clients across the steel, power generation, refining, petrochemical, and midstream energy sectors. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary projects through planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning while serving as a trusted technical advisor to clients. This is a REMOTE WORK role open to US-based candidates, with preference for candidates in the Greater Chicago, Pittsburgh or Philadelphia areas.
Essential Functions
  • Lead mechanical engineering efforts for capital improvement, maintenance, expansion, and reliability projects.
  • Develop project scopes, engineering design criteria, and technical solutions in collaboration with clients and internal project teams.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, studies, specifications, equipment datasheets, and design deliverables.
  • Develop specifications for:

    • Pumps
    • Pressure vessels
    • Storage tanks
    • Heat exchangers
    • Compressors
    • Material handling systems
    • Utility and process equipment

  • Prepare construction packages, scopes of work, procurement documents, and bid evaluations.
  • Conduct site assessments, field investigations, and bid walkdowns.
  • Perform engineering evaluations in accordance with applicable industry standards including ASME, API, NFPA, PIP, and related codes.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering efforts with process, electrical, structural, civil, piping, and instrumentation engineering teams.
  • Support construction activities through RFI responses, startup assistance, and commissioning support.
  • Lead design reviews and quality reviews to ensure technical accuracy and project quality.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers while promoting engineering best practices.
  • Support proposal development, project estimating, and technical business development activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 15+ years of mechanical engineering experience supporting heavy industrial, manufacturing, power generation, steel, petrochemical, refinery, or midstream facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Rotating equipment
    • Pressure vessels
    • Heat transfer equipment
    • Fluid systems
    • Piping systems
    • Utility systems
    • Mechanical equipment reliability

  • Working knowledge of ASME, API, NFPA, and PIP standards.
  • Experience developing technical specifications, scopes of work, equipment procurement packages, and contractor bid evaluations.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and engineering software tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Proficiency with Caesar II stress analysis software.
  • Experience conducting root cause investigations, reliability studies, and asset integrity assessments.
  • Multiple state PE registrations or NCEES Record.

Location Note:
This is a remote work position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate's location.
Salary Range:
$140,000-190,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
