Reading & Writing Learning Specialist
Department: Academic Achievement Center
Location: Hybrid - remote & on-site

Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.
Position Summary:
The idealcandidate will join a vibrant and inclusive educational community and have adesire and ability to work with a population of students with various needs and backgrounds. This is a part-time position with nobenefits. This position will facilitate the development and implementation ofacademic services in reading and writing across the curriculum. The Learning Specialist will workindividually or with groups of students to promote academic success andretention, may train tutors in working with students on reading andwriting.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Meet with students individually to assess learning needs in the areas of reading and writing across the curriculum.Deliver direct services or refer to appropriate resources;
  • Recommend and implement innovative approaches to students' academic success, life-long learning, and independent learning;
  • Work with peer tutors to support student learning, including possible training and mentoring of peer tutors;
  • Assist with community and college outreach in support of the Academic Achievement Center's mission, functions, and role in the college community;
  • Determine suitable referrals to other college resources based on student need;
  • May assist in the development of non-traditional approaches for programming in reading/writing;
  • May assist with creating and delivering curriculum and/or workshops to address student success;
  • May collaborate with other reading/writing specialists and faculty across the disciplines to determine student needs and develop response strategies;
  • May assist in grant writing and reporting and in the implementation of grant-funded initiatives; and
  • Perform related duties, as required.

Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Rhetoric/Composition, English, ESL,Education, or closely related field; with one (1) year experience and/ortraining that includes teaching, instructional technology or programdevelopment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, andexperience.
PreferredQualifications:
  • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of Affirmative Action;
  • Experience working in a community college or similar environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with underserved students;
  • Demonstrated experience in the instruction of reading and writing;
  • Experience working with ESL students and with adult learners;
  • Experience in the use of competency-based, individualized instruction, preferably in a comprehensive learning center or writing center;
  • Basic working knowledge of writing center theory and pedagogy;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member;
  • Experience in the use of technology in the teaching of reading and writing, and for purposes of scheduling and data tracking;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of a community college; and
  • Experience in higher education, preferably at a community college.

Salary Range: $35.31 per hour
Position Type: MCCC-Professional Grade 5
