Job description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and reports to a Systems Engineer Lead

You will:

  • Own and develop strategy for Verification and Validation of Vehicle Systems for new and existing autonomous vehicle platforms, specifically for the Thermal Management, Networks, and Cybersecurity domains. You will be responsible for:
    • Plan and schedule V&V campaigns based on the scope of Requirements
    • Coordinate, and supervise the verification activities for these domains (reviewing Requirements, designing Tests, and getting them executed)
    • Drive alignment and test planning activities with both internal and external OEM partners to ensure efficient and effective collaboration across Waymo
    • Provide technical support to Test Engineers and Test Conductors during the execution of the verification activities
    • Become the point of contact and be accountable for the tests requested from Systems Engineers or Developers to test new features or detect regressions for existing ones
    • Develop and execute on test automation strategy for verification corpus which effectively utilizes Waymo's suite of test environments from software-in-loop simulation to component HILs to full vehicle HILs
  • Provide technical training to other Test Engineers to grow the team's skillset. For example: use of test equipment, analysis tools, test methodologies, or scripting languages
  • Lead the qualification of new Waymo driver SW releases for the Vehicle Test Engineering team

You have:

  • Expertise in one of the following technical domains:
    • Thermal Management: experience with testing thermal performance of complex systems, for example using thermal chambers, windtunnels, or simulation
    • Networks and cybersecurity: communication protocols, networks security, networks architecture and testing this type of infrastructure
  • Test planning and experimental design, especially designing for safety and repeatability
  • Data analysis and test scripting/automation experience (C/C++, Python, Matlab/Simulink)
  • Project management. Ability to understand the scope of work, available resources and timeline, and translate it into schedules. Being able to make and communicate trade-offs between program conflicts
  • Excellent communication, coordination and collaboration skills. Being able to support the execution of multiple tests activities in parallel
  • Bachelor and/or Master's degree in a relevant engineering or a related field (including ME, EE, CS, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace, etc.) or equivalent practical experience

We prefer:

  • Electromechanical systems: design, build, and troubleshoot systems that combine HW,electrical systems, communications, and software
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles such as defining requirements and formal verification and validation methods
  • Database analysis in SQL or similar
