What is a remote US GAAP accountant?

A Remote US GAAP Accountant is a finance professional who works from a remote location and specializes in ensuring that a company's financial statements comply with the United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP). These accountants prepare, review, and analyze financial documents for accuracy and compliance. They may also assist with audits, financial reporting, and the implementation of new accounting standards, all while collaborating with teams and clients virtually.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote US GAAP accountant?

To thrive as a Remote US GAAP Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and, often, a CPA certification. Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, along with advanced Excel skills, is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These skills ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and efficient collaboration with teams and clients from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working remotely in US GAAP accounting roles?

Professionals in remote US GAAP accounting roles often face challenges related to communication and collaboration, especially when coordinating with team members across different time zones or departments. Ensuring access to secure and up-to-date financial data can require strict adherence to company protocols and the use of specialized software. Additionally, staying current with frequent updates to GAAP standards may require extra initiative in a remote setting, as in-person training and peer discussions are less accessible. Despite these challenges, many find that remote roles offer flexibility and autonomy, while still providing opportunities to collaborate virtually with audit teams, finance departments, and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and eager to grow within a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage the daily, weekly, and monthly US GAAP accounting tasks for the foreign acquisition, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Own the month-end close process, including reviewing account reconciliations, posting adjusting journal entries, consolidating into the Hims & Hers' instance of NetSuite and completing assigned responsibilities as a reviewer in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to team members supporting both the US GAAP and local accounting.
  • Participate in due diligence and integration for new market launches and expansions.
  • Lead and advocate for process improvements and system enhancements to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Develop strong cross-functional relationships with internal stakeholders and ensure timely, accurate delivery of requests and projects.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for relevant accounting matters, ensuring clear communication and issue escalation as needed.

Experience & Skills:
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting. Big-4 experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong US GAAP experience; exposure to IFRS or other non-US GAAP accounting standards is strongly preferred.
  • BA or BS degree in Accounting.
  • CPA or active progress toward CPA certification is strongly preferred.
  • West Coast candidates are strongly preferred (for international calls).
  • Proven experience managing international entities and working across multiple currencies.
  • Advanced Excel and ERP system proficiency (NetSuite experience a plus).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Prior experience in a public company environment and with SOX compliance preferred.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work effectively in both remote and in-person settings.
  • Comfortable working across time zones for international calls (occasional early/late meetings) - West Coast location preferred for scheduling overlap.
Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):
  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles
  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days
