What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote UI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote UI Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and UI design principles, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems like Git, and responsive design tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills help you stand out, especially in a remote work environment. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality user interfaces, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and ensuring project success.

What are remote UI developers?

Remote UI developers are professionals who design and implement user interfaces for websites or applications while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. They use front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular to create interactive and visually appealing user experiences. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams through digital communication tools, manage code repositories online, and often have flexible schedules. Remote UI developers need strong communication and time-management skills to be effective in a distributed work setting.

How do Remote UI Developers typically collaborate with design and backend teams to ensure seamless project delivery?

Remote UI Developers often use collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, and Figma to communicate effectively with design and backend teams. Regular virtual meetings, design hand-off sessions, and code reviews are essential to keep everyone aligned and address potential issues early. Working remotely requires proactive communication and clear documentation to bridge any gaps caused by physical distance. By participating in agile sprints and daily stand-ups, Remote UI Developers help ensure that user interface components integrate smoothly with backend services and match the intended design specifications.

What Does a Remote UI Developer Do?

As a remote UI developer, you work from home to design the front-end of web applications. Your responsibilities center around creating a smooth user interface. UI and UX typically go hand in hand for developers. You translate wireframes to actual code for the visual elements of an application, work with graphic designers to implement their designs, and ensure the app is easy to use. Optimizing the speed and scalability of the app is also part of your responsibilities as a remote UI developer. This job requires you to work in tandem with back-end developers as well.

What is the difference between Remote Ui Developer vs Remote Front End Developer?

While both roles involve front-end skills, a Remote Ui Developer primarily focuses on designing and implementing user interfaces with an emphasis on aesthetics and user experience. In contrast, a Remote Front End Developer concentrates on coding and developing functional, interactive web applications. The roles often overlap, but the UI Developer leans more toward design, whereas the Front End Developer emphasizes coding and functionality.

This purpose drives everything we do-from how we serve our members to how we support one another as colleagues. With a strong commitment to community impact, OCCU lives its values of tenacity, humility, and big-heartedness every day.
OCCU is seeking an experienced Senior Developer to design, build, integrate, and support internally developed software and data systems. This role is well-suited for a developer who excels in complex environments, enjoys solving data and integration challenges, and is committed to building reliable, high-quality systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, integrate, and support OCCU's internally built software solutions.
  • Build and maintain relational data structures, stored procedures, ETL processes, and high-availability data infrastructure.
  • Support and enhance proprietary applications, including UI components and back-end workflows.
  • Collaborate with QA to create automated test cases and resolve defects.
  • Document workflows, integration points, and development processes for long-term sustainability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Tier 2/3 technical issues and support release activities.
  • Apply Scrum and ITIL methodologies to ensure consistent, high-quality development practices.
  • Partner with Developers, Solutions Architects, Project Managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.

What We're Looking For:
  • Minimum of five years of practical or academic development experience, including work with large datasets and high-volume applications.
  • Strong database skills - queries, stored procedures, data structures, relational database concepts, performance tuning, and scaling.
  • Experience with ETL processes, data pipelines, and integration with third-party systems.
  • Full-stack development experience in modern programming languages.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Financial industry or regulated environment experience preferred but not required.

Education requirement:
Enrollment in or completion of a four-year Computer Science degree (with completed database coursework), or equivalent experience demonstrating practical technical skills.
Why Join OCCU:
OCCU offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth, including:
  • Low-cost medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid time off plus 13 paid holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement for eligible education and training
  • Company-paid long-term disability
  • 40 hours of company-paid core time annually for full-time employees to participate in community volunteer opportunities

OCCU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. If you're a skilled developer who thrives on building reliable systems, solving complex technical challenges, and contributing to a mission-driven organization, we encourage you to apply.
